A Newtonian Rocket

Later this year, the Falcon 9 rocket will become the first private spacecraft to carry a crew, and the first crewed launch from the United States since the Space Shuttle was retired in 2011.

The Falcon 9 doesn't look much like the Space Shuttle. In fact, it looks a lot more like the Saturn rockets that first took humans to the moon more than 50 years ago. But all three of these rockets operate using the same principles, which would have been familiar to Isaac Newton:
