What Shape Is It?

If we were to slice a 3D shape with a straight cut, the newly exposed cut surfaces would each be a cross-section of the figure. For example, cutting a cylinder at different angles results in cross-sections with different shapes — a circle or an ellipse in these cases:

This is a way to see inside the cylinder, but what if we don't want to cut it? Is there a way to see inside the shape without damaging it?
