Average

Twelve years ago, the average of the ages of the members of a joint family having ten members was 25 years. Four years later a member aged 50 years died and a child was born in the family that year. Four years after that, another member aged 50 years died and another child was born. Find the present average age of the members of the family (in years).

12 twelve years ago : total age \(=10\times 25 = 250\)

8 years ago : total age \(=240+10\times4-50+0 = 240\)

4 years ago : total age \(=230+10\times4-50+0=230\)

now : total age \(=230+10\times4=270\)

present average age \(=27\)
