# BRILLIAthon

From today, I will start a contest.

LaTeX is $$20$$ points.

Intelligible Solution is $10$ points.

I will not include pictures and animations, but if you choose to use it, I'll award $1$ point for each (out of generosity)

Uniqueness is $10$ points.

And $3$ points for (you may disagree with this, but I see this as an essential part of a solution) using an algorithmic structure.

Total points is $45$. ($43$ excluding the pictures and animations.)

Dates are: $17$th July to $19$th July

Maximum participants (excluding invited people) is $5$. Including the invited participants, the maximum amount of participants is $7$.

The reason for participants restriction is due to my studies and limited time on my BRILLIANT 'shift'.

My BRILLIANT 'shift' is $9:00$am to $3:00$pm. My break is $11:00$ to $11:30$ am and my lunchtime is $12:30$ to $1:30$pm - don't disturb during this time. After $3:00$pm, I am not available till the next day. My studies for Year $10$ and $11$ has primarily shaped my 'shift'.

There will be $5$ problems - $1$ for each day. Time of posting will vary, so be aware.

If you get all $43 \backslash 45$ points, you will receive the title of 'BRILLIAthon Star'. If not all, the highest amount will receive that title. (Hint: consecutive 'BRILLIAthon Star' titles can push your bid for first place.)

All participants will be awarded with shaping one of my problems of their choice

The top $3$ will be awarded with posting a problem for me - if I can solve it, I may post a solution.

The winner's award will be announced at the awards ceremony...

Good luck!

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

• Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
• Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
• Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.

Sorry, Percy, @Siddharth Chakravarty, and @Yajat Shamji, I will definitely solve all the question but I won't write a long elaborated explanation due to time constraints. Thus, i won't be participating. Good luck to all the three of you!

- 11 months, 2 weeks ago

Yes, that is completely fine, after all, Brilliant is all about learning.

- 11 months, 2 weeks ago

You don't have to post solutions. All you have to do is solve the problem. The solution posting is entirely up to you.

- 11 months, 2 weeks ago

I also have a lot a work pending, so now I don't think I'll participate in the contests. Sorry @Yajat Shamji and @Percy Jackson! I'll definitely solve the problems, though.

- 11 months, 1 week ago

Its alright, everyone, who's leaving, I'm late though......LOL

- 11 months, 1 week ago

I will participateeee @Yajat Shamji

- 11 months, 2 weeks ago

First participant!

- 11 months, 2 weeks ago

I'll participate! Count me in @Yajat Shamji!

- 11 months, 2 weeks ago

Second participant!

- 11 months, 1 week ago

I'm hurt, I ain't invited, but I'd like to participate please!! Makes baby seal face

PS - I'm not really hurt, its no big deal @Yajat Shamji

- 11 months, 2 weeks ago

Oh yes, I just wanted to ask. I cannot seem to invite you until you replied. Could you tell me why @Percy Jackson?

- 11 months, 2 weeks ago

@Hamza Anushath - Dunno, happens with me too, I can't mention anyone if they haven't at least seen the page.

- 11 months, 1 week ago

That’s because you can’t just type @Hamza Anushath, you have to type @hamzaanushath, and a table will show up, and you choose the right user.

- 11 months, 1 week ago

I know @Jeff Giff , but when the table appears, some other names come, not Yajat Shamji, or Hamza Anushath.

- 11 months, 1 week ago

Third participant!

- 11 months, 1 week ago

Wow, you are generous, 2 points for pics and animations, I'm just basking in the glow of your generosity. @Yajat Shamji LOL XD

- 11 months, 2 weeks ago

I would like to participate. But I would also like to know when the problems are posted, and when the solutions are expected. Thanks!

- 11 months, 2 weeks ago

Fourth participant!

- 11 months, 1 week ago

I’m also in :)

- 11 months, 1 week ago

Fifth and final non-invited participant!

- 11 months, 1 week ago

Update: All participants must register before $15$th July, $11$am.

- 11 months, 2 weeks ago

Update: Since @Mahdi Raza's not willing to post solutions (I totally understand), I request @David Vreken to step up.

- 11 months, 1 week ago

@David Vreken, you have less than $2$ hours to say whether you're in or not.

- 11 months, 1 week ago

Update: Only $7$ participants are allowed (again, due to limited time and my studies).

So, David Vreken, we're all counting on you now...

- 11 months, 1 week ago

Less than $40$ minutes, @David Vreken

- 11 months, 1 week ago

- 11 months, 1 week ago

Sixth participant!

- 11 months, 1 week ago

So lucky!

- 11 months, 1 week ago

Thnx @Yajat Shamji

- 11 months, 1 week ago

@David Vreken, can you please decide now - in or not?

- 11 months, 1 week ago

I can participate if it's not too late. (Sorry, I was sleeping earlier, it looks like it was 4:30 am for me when you first asked :-))

- 11 months, 1 week ago

Seventh and final participant for the competiton!

Also, I didn't know you're sleeping, but it's okay.

What is it @Hamza Anushath

- 11 months, 1 week ago

@Hamza Anushath, I need your help - I don't know how to create a table in LaTeX.

- 11 months, 1 week ago

My method in hall of fame for Mathathon

- 11 months, 1 week ago

Thanks.

- 11 months, 1 week ago

- 11 months, 1 week ago

It is good to see you grow up so fast, teaching people stuff you yourself never knew before

- 11 months, 1 week ago

Plus, is my picture still in your Mathathon @Percy Jackson?

- 11 months, 1 week ago

Update: Dates have changed from $27 - 31$ July to $17 - 19$ July due to summer studies.

- 11 months, 1 week ago

When's the first problem then, bro? @Yajat Shamji

- 11 months, 1 week ago

Update: Once you've posted your solutions, you have until $2:50$pm to edit. After that, I will post the Daily Problem Commentary (basically me being a commentator - sorry if the puns offend you - :D). No more editing after $2:50$pm.

- 11 months, 1 week ago

Update: Help from the organiser is allowed.

- 11 months, 1 week ago

I haven't learnt chemistry yet.

- 11 months, 1 week ago

Just started High School

- 11 months, 1 week ago

Oh. There's $2$ problems so you may be able to solve the next one - it's Algebra...

- 11 months, 1 week ago

Update: Due to timing of the awards ceremony, there will be no certificates and the winner's prize will be announced at the awards ceremony.

Also, you've got less than $10$ minutes to post the solutions to the problems of Day $3$ and nobody has solved it or posted a solution on it...

For $\sin x = \cos x = \tan x$, there are more than two coordinates that make the equation false, making the question impossible to answer.

In the ranges: $0 \leq x \leq 1$ and $0 \leq y \leq 1$?

x is what radians or degrees? And also I see many co-ordinates as @David Vreken said.

No, it's just co-ordinates.

If 1 $x$ unit is 1 degree, then 90 $x$ units are 90 degrees, where the co-ordinate will be (90,1) and in radians, it will be (pi,1). So which unit it is?

And now you deleted the problem also. Why, because it was wrong?

No, I reposted it.

Unless you had asked the difference of the y-coordinates because ratios don't have units it did not matter but for x-coordinates the units matter.

$\sin x = \cos x$ has a solution of $(\frac{\pi}{4}, \frac{\sqrt{2}}{2})$, but $\tan \frac{\pi}{4} \neq \frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}$, $\sin x = \tan x$ has a solution of $(0, 0)$, but $\cos 0 \neq 0$, and $\cos x = \tan x$ has a solution of $(0.6662, 0.7862)$, but $\sin 0.6662 \neq 0.7862$. That's three coordinates by just assuming at least two of the equations are true.

I have changed it - you can use a graphing calculator.

For the second problem, what do you mean by "connections"?

It's a bit like a magic square.

Only no numbers, just lines.

I'll show you tomorrow, fair?

Because it's $3$pm...

Update: The awards ceremony will happen tomorrow at $11:30$am.

Which means you've got until tomorrow, $11:25$am to post and edit solutions...

I want to leave the contest, please I don't have much time to use for writing solutions for the Brilliathon otherwise the other things which are more important are not done. Also, I wanted more elegant and hard problems plus the changing of the problem's wording has become a mess. Thanks :)

That leaves 3 participants in the contest, I left too, as timezone problem was killing mysleep, and he reduced Uniquness points for posting late :) @Siddharth Chakravarty

I had the same thought for your Mathathon also, but I never got time to reply you back that I wanted to leave. Btw I have remembered the first 100 prime numbers, Yay! I like to memorise special numbers.

First 100 prime numbers??? Btw, I posted your certificate in the Mathathon 2020 Hall of Fame page, check it out............@Siddharth Chakravarty

Yes from childhood, my dad made me a hobby to look and memorise patterns in special numbers.

Oh, great! Did you see the certificate?

Yes I saw it. Great!

Glad you like it! I'm working on a trig calculator, that does all the trig functions, like co secant and secant, do you want to see?

It is a but buggy, coz I'm still fixing it, but here's the link if you wanna see - Javascript Trig Calculator

Nice there, although I would suggest that suppose when you want to type the angle, the whole text should get cleared. Like we have to delete the whole text, and then write the angle.

Of course, I'll think of it, thanks for the idea!

@Percy Jackson, when I clear the second label box to type the round off number, it wouldnt allow me

Your coding is flawed in that part...

Yes, you can type in your number in between and then clear the text leaving the number you have typed so that you can type.

Update: Day $3$, Problem $1$ has changed.

Time's up! It's the end of BRILLIAthon! The awards ceremony will begin in $5$ minutes.
