Calvin is Bored

This is a problem in the pattern recognition technique - basic - set 1

"Calvin is looking at the ages of 4 of the Brilliant students. Being extremely bored, he decided to add them up 3 at a time, and obtained the values 44, 51, 53, 56. What is the sum of the ages of all 4 of these students?"

What does "add them up 3 at a time" mean ?? Please don't write answers.
