# Can't CHEMISTRY get more importance? I want as many comments as possible.

I request @Calvin Lin Sir , @David Mattingly Sir , @Peter Taylor Sir , @Arron Kau Sir and other brilliant staff whom I don't know to look into this matter please

This is for everyone using brilliant.org.

How many of you like chemistry?

And how many of you say that it must be made a subject on brilliant?

I would like as many views as possible . . .

If one can frame good chemistry questions that provoke thinking, I don't see why not. As @Ronak Agarwal mentioned, chemistry is more of an experimental science. A lot of it is about doing experiments and reaching conclusions. The difference between chem and phy/math is that phy/math can be used to model problems which involve use of multiple concepts which are generally known to many. Granted that physical chemistry problems can be made, but think about it, an organic chemistry problem? From what I know, a multiple choice problem will immediately trigger a google search which will give the answer and a numerical problem(eg: how many of these compunds are ...) will trigger another google search which will give the answer. Same goes for asking inorganic chemistry questions. Much of chemistry is made to be explained and understood.

I am weak in chemistry as compared to math and physics, I have lesser interest in it too. But if we can find out a way to get around the problems mentioned above, it would be a great help for those who want to do chemistry!

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Yes, one can make good questions based on chemical equilibrium, chemical kinetics and topics like collision theory, gaseous state, liquid state, electrochemistry. For organic chemistry and inorganic chemistry, I hate those questions which requires students to know a certain exception rather than go about thinking about it.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Haha, the topics that you have mentioned, I have posted questions on those , though 3-4 are not mine !

- 3 years, 4 months ago

of course, what you've said is right. But there are questions which 'DON'T' trigger Google search.

Chemistry, doesn't always mean compounds ans elements of carbon or any other elements, it also includes vital parts, such as, mole concept, mixtures and much more. . .

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Hi;

We have a moderators meeting this week and one of our agenda is to figure out what can be done with chemistry ratings. We'll possibly be developing chemistry soon!

Staff - 3 years, 4 months ago

Finally some good news !!

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Thank you! that would be great then.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Certainly chemistry should be included . Physical chemistry is as good as physics and organic is tricky too but yes more or less answers to inorganic can be easily copied from net so physical and organic should be included as subjects.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Thank you very much! Please do reshare the note . . .

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I request @Calvin Lin Sir , @David Mattingly Sir , @Peter Taylor Sir , @Arron Kau Sir to please look into this matter.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

if chemistry adderd....hurray ......more members will join brilliant.........

just make it happen.....plzzzzzzz......

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Of course, the moderators are going through this, and according to Ronak Agarwal disscussions are done and chemistry will be added as a new subject!

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Discussions are done and I believe chemistry will be added as a subject after june, perhaps.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Thanks! Are you a moderator too???

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Yes.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Have you discussed this thing with the staff???

If yes I am grateful to you!

Thank you very much!

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I have not discussed this thing with the staff, it's simply the result I know, may be from june chemistry will be added as a subject.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Well thanks!

I am extremely happy!

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Chemistry is not a muggup subject, but its primarily an experimental science, It is best done in laboratories and not on the paper. Its hard be innovative while making chemistry problems because unless experiments confirm it , he cant even say his logic is right, it will be disputed too much, which factor wins and which not is a thing to remember, just think of the periodic table. Yes one can make good questions regarding differential equations in chemical kinetics but then, thats just Mathematics. all innovative portions of chemistry are just physics

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Please don't get me wrong but you see you are not mugging up chemistry but instead you are mugging up exceptions, and that's the WORST part of it. Remember I am not against chemistry I am in favour of questions that require thinking rather than rote learning.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Yes, and i agree, but i hope you will agree that it is sort of necessary to do that , if chemists could find absolute reasons, thats what we would learn but unfortunately the math is too complex for such a large collection of atoms and we have to stick with remembering some large scale results because it is useful in industry.

Once , again, i am agreeing with you, and i do not support chemistry as a whole in Brilliant, just adding that it is useful, just like biology is useful, or most of us would be dead from diseases by now

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I am not against chemistry as a subject on brilliant, I am against rating on problems of organic and inorganic chemistry.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Haha , that's what I said right at the beginning that just similar to Classical Mech and Elec. & Mag. , another topic like Phy. Chem. should be added .

- 3 years, 4 months ago

But only Physical Chemistry must have rating but, not Organic and Inorganic chemistry.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Yes , I agree on that . Can't we have something like Phy. Chem. (Beta) or something like that !

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Thanks! I love chemistry very much, so I'm looking forward for getting chem as a subject.

It's learning that I want more than answering questions, we get a lot of knowledge reading the articles that the brilliant minds have posted . . . Thanks again for supporting me!

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Well said. +1

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Yes ! I love Chemistry way more than Physics . Recently I shared a set of Chemistry questions to give life to Chem on Brilliant .

I suggest that even you start posting Chem questions , only then the Brilliant Staff will recognise that people want Chem as a Major topic . I am a fan of Chem and a hater of Phy , so I want Chem here on Brilliant as far as possible !

Let's keep on resharing this note till it reaches the staff !

- 3 years, 4 months ago

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I think that you have got enough replies , no ?

- 3 years, 4 months ago

more than enough

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Me. I would love Brilliant, and wouldn't mind upgrading just for Chemistry.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Did you check out my comment from that combinatorics note of yours ,Vikram ?

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Yes I did. Though I can't spare time now to learn it from the basics, I am sure to excel. Thank you :)

- 3 years, 3 months ago

I request @Calvin Lin Sir , @David Mattingly Sir , @Peter Taylor Sir , @Arron Kau Sir to comment please . . .

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I request @Calvin Lin Sir , @David Mattingly Sir , @Peter Taylor Sir , @Arron Kau Sir to please look into this matter.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Yes, chemistry should also be given importance. It should also be included as one of the topics in brilliant.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Thank you very much!, Please do re share the note, so that it reaches the staff. . .

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I request @Calvin Lin Sir , @David Mattingly Sir , @Peter Taylor Sir , @Arron Kau Sir, once again to look into this matter plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..................

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I disagree that chemistry must be given importance, ofcourse that question that use mathematics in chemistry are OK i.e. physical chemistry are good enough, but same can't be said about inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry, you see questions in inorganic chemistry doesn't require thinking AT ALL and I believe this site is promoting thinking on our part, chemistry is an more or less an experimental subjects where predictive models don't work as compared to physics where predictive models are accurate to some extent and maths being an exact subject.

Chemistry is not a subject where there are problems to be solved, it's just about doing experiments and finding new results( like finding synthesis in organic chemistry)

Questions on inorganic chemistry can be simply done by searching up the net hence there is no use of questions based on that on brilliant. Well some may say that cheaters may do so but still it is not good that people simply mug up the facts of inorganic chemistry and doing nothing practically.

And subjects like chemistry must not be made a subject on brilliant. Being good in chemistry simply implies that you are capable in mugging up facts more and more and that doesn't make any of us any good.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Rutherford hated chemistry too...

“All science is either physics or stamp collecting.”

...until he got the nobel prize in chemistry, not physics.

Staff - 3 years, 4 months ago

Physics or Stamp Collecting Ha Ha Ha, totally agree with his views(just joking)

- 3 years, 4 months ago

You said it.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I totally disagree with you that chemistry is all about mugging up . Also considering the fact that you got selected for INCHO , it forces me to think that you just got selected because you mugged up facts , now that is not at all related to Learning !

I agree in the cheaters part, but that shouldn't stop the staff from starting a section called Physical Chemistry , as is the case with Classical Mechanics, and Electricity and Magnetism ! After all those too are TOPICS from Physics!

Also if you think that Chemistry is all about mugging up things , it only further proves the fact that you like more practical things , say Physics and 'Maths ,thus proving that your opinions are biased .

No offence though , even I. Am just voicing out my opinion ! And I haven't down voted your comment since you too are giving out your view on this topic and I believe that everyone has the right to do it. :)

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Atleast someone has not taken offence from my comment.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I agree with @Krishna Ar and @Azhaghu Roopesh M .

That is like looking at Class 6-7 computer science and saying that computer science is just about mugging up and knowing how to use MS Office.

Staff - 3 years, 4 months ago

Did you look that up ,or you knew of that fact ? Just curious !

- 3 years, 4 months ago

But there are variations coming up there. In chemistry, limited amount of logic and limited amount of questions too.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

You probably haven't cool enough chemistry questions, then. But that's just you. I've not seen cool enough chemistry questions, either. I am not very good at it.

But some people are. And probably, there are interesting chemistry questions too.

I often make my own combinatorics/computer science problems. Probably, some chemistry enthusiast will make their own problems too

Staff - 3 years, 4 months ago

Have you tried this ?

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Well, I can agree with you. I think you are are right, yeah. And this was a stupid stand from me.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Oh really? Shouldn't you attribute this comment of yours to your limited knowledge of Chemistry?

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Have you studied 11,12 chemistry @Krishna Ar

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I have a done a good deal of 11th chemistry and know what's there in 12th. I do agree that ( I repeat, I emphasize), there is a lot of volume in Chemistry to be learnt and I too am not too fond of chemistry. But there is a way to voice opinions. Chemistry is one of the 5 major sciences. It definitely isn't all about rote learning. That's just the point what i wanted to put across

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Knowledge is different from logic.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Do you fricking think that there is something like "Logic of 11th std chem" or something like that. Kindly think before you comment~~

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Did I say that? You wrongly interpreted it .

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I very strongly agree with your views. Chemistry should not be included as a formal subject in Brilliant, as the subject is not thought provoking.

- 3 years, 2 months ago

I agree with you. But it's not only about mugging up facts. It's also about mugging up concepts and learning to apply them well. And just because a person likes a certain things doesnt mean the his/her opinions are biased @Azhaghu Roopesh M

- 3 years, 4 months ago

No no , you've got it wrong , I was just saying that , their opinions are influenced by their likes and dislikes, I'm not at all against his comment ! Please don't get the wrong meaning !

I respect everyone's views , don't make me public enemy no 1 !!!

- 3 years, 4 months ago

:)

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I didnt mean that either. It was just a matter-of-fact comment. I do know that you are open to everyone's opinions.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I disagree with your views. I don't care if I receive down-votes. I believe your reply has been influenced by your personal likes and dislikes. (I.E: your hatred for chemistry). Understand the fact that a large part of physics is just as theoretical and mug-up type as Chemistry

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I disagree with your views, then. And hence, I agree with Ronak Aggarwal. Because if it happens, voices for Biology will also arouse, I guess. Or in other sense, "mathematical biology". Brilliant can be brilliant only for mathematics and it should be so only. If you want chemistry, take up other forums. Variations for chemistry questions are very less.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Dude, Krishna is a biology person ! He wants to become a doc !

Also I don't see anyone commenting FOR Chem though ! I didn't know that Chem was this hated a subject !

- 3 years, 4 months ago

That's why I commented that way. A personal one, I guess. Sorry for that! My exams, they are fine. I just don't care of them much. They are just not the most important exams of my life to be taken seriously. Moreover, they are boring. Sst, well, it is on 10th March.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

When I was in 10 th , I was waiting for that day when Sst exams where scheduled on, I was very happy that Sst would vanish from my life after that ! Similar to when @Ronak Agarwal felt when our English exams got over !

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Oh lol! You reminded me of some good news in the fray! Thanks!

- 3 years, 4 months ago

:)

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I strongly agree with you, Karthik. Chemistry is not at all thought provoking. Brilliant is only brilliant with Maths and Physics, the most thought provoking ones. I would not like to have wikis which I have to mug up for levelling up!

- 3 years, 2 months ago

Yeah Right. Another Chemophobe! I can vouch for the fact that Biology is more logical and intuitive than any of the other sciences. If y'er happy with the Math part of Brilliant, be happy. Nobody's asking you to solve problems of the Bio section / Chem section. As simple as that.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I had a similar feeling that Biology is all about mugging up until high school but now, I do not agree with it. The subject has its own challenges too.

Staff - 3 years, 4 months ago

No, it's not like that! It's like a predicted genetic drift where there can be a shift of max population from Math to other sciences. And I am afraid that shouldn't happen.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Well,Well,Well @Kartik Sharma this is not a battle between the so called MATHEMATICS Kingdom vs CHEMISTRY KINGDOM , don't take it that way.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

But you've got to agree that someone surely stirred up quite an interesting debate !

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Oh, if I exaggerated it a little(which I think I did), then I am wrong.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

You can bring more people on Brilliant who are maths fans , like I brought 7 of my friends , in fact I kind of forced them to join !

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Well, that's easier said than done.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Try it then ! Best of luck !!

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Well, I agree that development should happen but originality should remain. A tea seller near my neighborhood sells thousands of teas everyday and probably earn more than my papa but you know what, his shop is the same "khoka" he had when he opened it. Only development he had had from the money is that he now has got his children to the best international schools. And yeah has got a mobile phone for him(the old Nokia only), nothing else(not even utensils, nothing). And he is a hit! A total hit!

*True story!

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Exactly , I agree with your first line that originality should remain , ofc it will ! Do you think that Brilliant will forsake Maths ! I don't think that'll ever happen . But yes , some development more importantly , some additions must be there :)

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I really don't think so. But I am just afraid. Because we should consider all points. That is democracy! Actually, I was not that against Chemistry. Just wanted to make more points against it so that it will not be a unilateral talk, you know.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I totally respect your views , and I am not against it , but haha , there are not many voices in support of me other than Krishna and Agnishom , apart from OP !

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Many people who have not studied chemistry in detail ( I do not mean Ronak or any of us at all) share this view.

The night before my chemistry exams, my mom ask, "Have you learnt all your formulae well? I hope you had no problem mugging it all up." lol

(She is an arts major, btw)

Staff - 3 years, 4 months ago

I guess so , btw on whose side will you be on during the Mods meet ? :)

- 3 years, 4 months ago

On Chemistry's side.

I am not really good in chemistry, though. (Unless you judge me by my school performance)

Staff - 3 years, 4 months ago

It's always what interests you , so I guess this Chemistry thing cropped up at the right moment , eh ?

I'll keep my fingers crossed and wish that all those who can make a change (yeah you guys !!) do something for us Chem fans !!

- 3 years, 4 months ago

What always interests me?

I am sorry, I cannot promise a change. It's really upto Calvin.

Unsubscribing this thread, my notis are filling up.

Staff - 3 years, 4 months ago

There is only Ronak here on my side. It should be the other way round, though.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I am on your side bro!

- 3 years, 2 months ago

ROTFL. BTW, would you mind enlightening me with the meaning of the word "Khoka".? Thanks

P.S- "Thousands of teas" is wrong grammatically (It ought to be- "thousands of cups of tea") Similarly, even "had had" is wrong. It indicates the perfect tense, which means he's wrapped up the tea business and is now just rejoicing the benefits of the business. But given the fact that he still sells teas, you mustn't use the perfect tense. The past imperfect must be used here. ---- (Please don't take offence)

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Is there some kind of fight between you and Kartik Sharma.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Yeah, kinda!

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Fight? Lol, nope. Why would I and why should I fight with him?

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Oh you forgot? We are always in a fight.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Oh so you are just joking with each other.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Sometimes, fights are more entertaining than jokes. You can call this edutainment if you want! (Whey! Edutainment is an official portmanteau)

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Of course. How can I forget the fact that we're always at loggerheads, always!!

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Don't forget that he's got @Ronak Agarwal by his side !! You are at a disadvantage !! :)

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Rightly said @Azhaghu Roopesh M

- 3 years, 4 months ago

:)

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Oh okay. Lol, "thousands of teas" was just to make rhyme, BTW. And "khoka", well, it is a famous word! In other words, just a small shop.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Thanks.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

here, it is haryanvi, i guess.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

'khoka' kind of means 'baby boy' or sometimes 'young boy' in bengali. not a very good translation

Staff - 3 years, 4 months ago

Yup! Khoka Babu! (That movie :P) I remember hearing this word in Calcutta during my sojourn there last Dussera

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I have a feeling that those films are kind of trash

Staff - 3 years, 4 months ago

IKR. What films interest you? Maybe :"A beautiful mind" or "Ramanujan" ? XD

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I have seen A Beautiful Mind and I enjoyed it. I also watched Aashiqui 2 and am glad that I have.

In Atmadeep workshop, we met a film director who actually explained us ( in a convincing way ) that no films are trash. They are art too and takes significant hard work to make

Staff - 3 years, 4 months ago

Before posting my comment I was well prepared for the comments I would be getting, like you are biased, your opinion comes from your personal dislikes and likes etc. Well what I am saying is practical opinion rather than thinking like an enthusiast. At least someone is agreeing with me.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I didn't take any offence for your comments, Ronak. I do agree with the fact that a large part of Chemistry (being taught to us ) is Theoretical. But then, yeah as @Agnishom Chattopadhyay said , its like calling C.S a mug-up type subject, just cause you need to know about the various algorithms to program.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

I agree with you !!

- 3 years, 4 months ago

there r levels and stuff, but the problem is participation is low when it comes to chem

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Honestly saying, Chemistry and Biology are never my cup of tea! If it goes on liking or admiration, I would love Math and Physics! Still I respect other's interests and feelings.

- 3 years, 2 months ago

Thanks for expressing your view, @Swapnil Das !

- 3 years, 2 months ago

Hey Sravanth, do you like chemistry?

- 3 years, 2 months ago

$$lots^{\infty}$$

- 3 years, 2 months ago

i dont,

but there is a section of chem..is it not

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Yeah, but won't it be a bit more interesting with all those levels and stuff.

- 3 years, 4 months ago

there r levels and stuff, but the problem is participation is low when it comes to chem

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Fine, but what about those who like to participate, like me?

I say it would be better to give some importance to it. . .

- 3 years, 4 months ago

Why don't u share some problems on cyclic conformers ? I have recently put a note requesting for that. But its still without proper response. From your so much love for chemistry I hope good problems near u. I will request u to make links of the problems.

- 2 years, 7 months ago

- 2 years, 7 months ago

I do not know to provide link. I am going to follow u. Then u can find my note.

- 2 years, 7 months ago

Just copy the URL and paste it here.

- 2 years, 7 months ago

Sure, I'll be posting problems soon!

- 2 years, 7 months ago
