First Female Winner of the Fields Medal

Prof Maryam Mirzakhani, an Iranian mathematician working in the US has become the first ever female winner of the celebrated Fields Medal.

The Fields Medal is a prize awarded every four years to two, three, or four mathematicians not over 40 years of age by the International Mathematical Union (IMU).
