  Easy Math Editor

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

No you're not real. You are just a butterfly dreaming about the human figure. But you do exist, even if you are just someone in a dream.

@Aditya Mittal Can you define existence, and what is real and what is unreal?

Siddharth Chakravarty - 3 months, 1 week ago

@Siddharth Chakravarty I'm not a philosophical expert. The butterfly dreaming is just a Young Sheldon thing. But I believe that we are just a part of a story and our decisions are technically not ours. And God is the writer.

@Siddharth Chakravarty What is this?

Aditya Mittal - 3 months, 1 week ago

@Aditya Mittal It basically speaks about Uncertainty, basically, from Science to religion everything is a belief, it might be true or not, and also we might never know the exact truth and thus always be uncertain. However, things which are well-defined like Maths, Logic are consistent within themselves assuming we have the proper set of axioms. Read about Godel's Incompleteness theorem.

@Siddharth Chakravarty Godel's incompleteness theorems are quite big. I'll read them. But what actually is that? One offers here a .....\text{One offers here a .....}

@Aditya Mittal DEVLOK with Devdutt Pattanaik\boxed{\text{DEVLOK with Devdutt Pattanaik}} It is a book on Hindu mythology but at the starting of the book, there is some good philosophy which has a resemblance to Uncertainty, Godel's Incompleteness theorem implicitly. Otherwise, it is filled with Hindu mythology stories.

@Siddharth Chakravarty I am actually interested in it because of the mythological stories. The lines mentioned Indra and Varuna and I knew that it was related to Indian mythology.

@S Broekhuis It’s a good song, I guess. But Rick didn’t actually make it. It was originally a meme where people have a misleading link to ‘rickroll’ them. It’s pretty funny sometimes.

Jason Gomez - 5 months, 1 week ago

This also\color{random}{\fcolorbox{random}{random}{\text{This also}}}

Jason Gomez - 5 months, 1 week ago

i'm not sure how random works in LaTex. in other languages a funktion is used to generate pseudo-random values. so if the function is started, it always starts with the same numbers in the same order.
therefore an initial value can be given to create a more random looking value. often the time is used for that.
anyway: if you can access the current time in ms then you can just use the last digits to create a somehow random value.

num IC - 5 months, 1 week ago

I think then I should be able to feed numbers into this, but when I checked google, nothing about this was anywhere

Jason Gomez - 5 months, 1 week ago

@Percy Jackson See this, do you have any idea about this

Jason Gomez - 5 months, 1 week ago

random is not a latex code, so usually if latex doesn't recognize a color code, it goes to default a.k.a black.

but sometimes it's very time consuming to read all that was posted. (tbh i had to learn quite a lot of self-discipline to avoid checking all notifications.)

regarding deleted posts: every correction of a post creates a new notification but only the newest one leads to the post.
so you were mainly missing wrong spellings or changed wordings.

Sarah Alam - 5 months ago

num IC - 5 months ago

@Num Ic I didn’t actually calculate it. I asked my dad and he gave me the answer. Vaguely. He also mentioned that the question didn’t make much sense and so I sort of cheated. I don’t actually know how it was solved.

@Jason Gomez Yup it’s the original, lol Percy you couldn’t beat me( maybe if you put it two days later, I might have clicked it by then, I had checked the first two for rickrolls but would have forgotten today\tomorrow)

Notifs been acting up lately. Seems like new update. Also, they removed the View Mobile Site/View Full Site buttons. I kinda liked the previous look better.

Could you guys try out my new problem, it shows that six people attempted and failed, and it is supposed to be an easy-ish problem, is there any problem with the problem statement or have I got the answer wrong?

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

should the answer be given in % or just a probability?
my first guess was 0.368 but i forgot something.
now i got it.
and i did it the same way as you showed in your solution (without the extend to infinity).

num IC - 5 months ago

Just a probability, percentage is used only when asked I thought, I’ll make that more clear

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

does indian number plates use leading zeroes?
maybe ppl assume a trap and exclude the numbers from 0 to 999.

num IC - 5 months ago

Sometimes they don’t but normally it’s kept, that’s the reason I put 0000 to 9999 so that all numbers below five digits are included

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

@Jason Gomez ;-) you asked why ppl might have failed. i just made some proposals.
but overal in my opinion your wording was good, so the failures might just be misscalculations.
maybe Sarah has an idea to improve the wording, but as i said: in my opinion your wording is good. and i like that challenge very much.

strange. it seems my comment to your (Jason) 'Bouncing up' solution was deleted by the staff.
i have no idea why.

num IC - 5 months ago

Even the other two, the staff really don't like people appreciating me sad (it's more likely that it's so that only important discussions may be seen by everybody and not appreciation)

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

yeah i thought so too, but it seems like something has changed bcs in former solutions a lot was just congratz.
btw: i got 52 notifications. i might not be able to catch that all up, so i might miss some of that precious communication.

num IC - 5 months ago

tbh the first time I read that, I read it as 'it seems my comment to Jason bouncing up was deleted by staff' lol

hm that sounds like 'bouncing up' is objectionable. if so: i apologize, that was not my intention.

num IC - 5 months ago

@Num Ic No, it sounds like jason is a flying bouncy ball, which is sorta true, except the bouncy ball part, but it was funny not objectinb-whatever lol

@A Former Brilliant Member Oh yeah u still can’t fly right lol

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

@Jason Gomez I can use water to propel myself up, I don't need to fly :)

I deleted the rickroll, because almost everyone already got rickrolled. We can include Frisk, Nathan and Nico if you want to @Jason Gomez

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

btw did you know @Mentions are also links to your profiles, as in if you click your mention, you'll get to your profile. You can scare people by doing [@person] (rickroll link) because the preview shows the rickroll link but it ultimately goes to your profile coz of Brilliant lol keep that in mind if we're including the others coz they don't know that

Oh nice

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

@Jason Gomez I did that to your mention in the above comment to demonstrate.

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

Its dam, not damn, and yes, I did do that. Did you get rickrolled? I was joking about the 'others don't know' thing. Frisk taught it to me. Only Nico doesn't have any tricks up his sleeve. The others are masters at pranks. Nathan will gladly lock the comment sections in any of your notes. You won't be able to post comments. We're all kinda powerful that way lol

@A Former Brilliant Member No, you literally mentioned it, I saw the bitly link

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

@A Former Brilliant Member And wdym by Nathan will lock up the comment section?

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

@Jason Gomez By making so much spam latex maybe that the note can’t handle?

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

@Jason Gomez Kinda...but its not spam, its one line of latex. The comment bar just disappears. Me, Frisk, Nathan, and Pall (deleted account, he's the one who created it) all know how to do it, but Nathan loves it the most, so we let him do it. Frisk organizes our tricks and forms more creative new tricks. Nathan's the nuke bomber. Pall's the brains, he creates the most tricks and I'm the...Percy, I guess...I don't really know what I do, but it's probably something important :)

Edit : opened it up later and found that it is in fact rendering properly now

155=1015 - 5 = 10

@Jason Gomez

@A Former Brilliant Member You used \ to escape the sequence, have to still formulate how exactly you did that

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

@Jason Gomez No, sometimes my latex seriously doesn't render, like now. It gets really laggy and all, and websites take 5-10 minutes to load. Usually when I preview a solution it happens, and its happening when I previewed my solution in today's problem. I've asked BM about this but BM told me the engineers are working on it.

@A Former Brilliant Member Well I know your prank and latex can’t fail on so small sequences

@Jason Gomez bruh not everything has to be a prank you know

@A Former Brilliant Member @Percy Jackson I found a way to nuke with the help of Num ic, it’s a little different but very annoying, I assume the nuke you were talking about was the abyss right, this one stops all notifications from a note(I think only mentions get through) and also gives error messages if you try to comment

Jason Gomez - 4 months, 3 weeks ago

@Jason Gomez How do you make that? Our abyss doesn't allow anyone to comment without a secret tactic. Have you been researching our old notes to find the secrets?

A Former Brilliant Member - 4 months, 3 weeks ago

@A Former Brilliant Member I actually knew about the abyss before you told about the nuke, just didn’t know it was the nuke, I learnt latex from you, so wanting to learn more I checked all your notes, and learnt more from Frisk Dreemurr, but I won’t have been motivated to learn latex if not for you

Jason Gomez - 4 months, 3 weeks ago

@Jason Gomez lol I knew we should've deleted our nuke research...good to know you learnt latex from me tho

I got the nuke site mention, unleash a nuke there so I may rate it, don't forget to include the latex code for the nuke

@A Former Brilliant Member Nah it’s very simple just look at it

Jason Gomez - 4 months, 3 weeks ago

Jason Gomez - 4 months, 3 weeks ago

@Jason Gomez Still nothing. It keeps sending an error message now saying server issue, but the message gets through eventually. Nothing nuke sized. Shall I demonstrate a real nuke in your test site?

@A Former Brilliant Member Wait that’s the first part of the story

@A Former Brilliant Member Yeah checked it it’s done

Jason Gomez - 4 months, 3 weeks ago

@Jason Gomez Also, are you getting 10-15 notifs right now from me? that's a hacker, certainly not me nuking and mentioning you to annoy you :)

A Former Brilliant Member - 4 months, 3 weeks ago

@Jason Gomez Yeah yeah I am getting the notifs, it seems that your first nuke neutralised my nukes, and then your second one put the note down

Jason Gomez - 4 months, 3 weeks ago

@Jason Gomez Actually, it was all one nuke. I just messed up the code. One nuke with all that power, and it rests in the hands of teenagers lol

Jason Gomez - 4 months, 3 weeks ago

@Jason Gomez gr8 way to annoy ppl ryt?

A Former Brilliant Member - 4 months, 3 weeks ago

@A Former Brilliant Member Ok now you nuke the note, I’ll remove the nuke I made then do it

Jason Gomez - 4 months, 3 weeks ago

@Jason Gomez But have you tried sending anything after the new two mentions

Jason Gomez - 4 months, 3 weeks ago

@Jason Gomez I nuked the note with the mentions again

Jason Gomez - 4 months, 3 weeks ago

@A Former Brilliant Member "A dam is a noun that refers to a structure built across a river to stop or slow down the water."
i assume that is not what Jason meant.

num IC - 5 months ago

@Num Ic It's a Percy Jackson reference, it's in one of Percy 's deleted notes

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

@Jason Gomez ok. thank you.
so in this case "dam" has somehow the meaning of "damn" ?

num IC - 5 months ago

@Jason Gomez Kinda yes, a character with no knowledge of the present referred to a canteen near a dam as the "damn canteen", that's how it started

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

@Jason Gomez ty. maybe i missed this book. it's quite a while ago that i read the percy jackson stories.

num IC - 5 months ago

Have you ever thought that everyone sees colours differently, but we call it the same colour because that is what we think it is? Like, I could see yellow, and you see blue, but we both call it blue because that’s what we think it’s called.

Sarah Alam - 5 months ago

yeah, but i found no way to check it (besides brain/mind exchange ;)

num IC - 5 months ago

Maybe one day we'll figure it out, whether it is mind exchange or not.

Sarah Alam - 5 months ago

I had thought of this before, and I remember making some kind of argument which eventually concluded we all should be seeing the same, I will post below this comment once I remember

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

Oh yeah I remember one point now, even if u do a brain exchange ultimately, it’s the eye that takes signal to pass to the brain so any difference should occur at the eye, and I think people have replaced whole eyes (not just the cornea, etc)by now, and if they don’t see any differently then we all see the same(mostly)

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

@Jason Gomez Well there are only so many combinations there can be. Maybe those people got lucky. Or when we comprehend the colours in our brain we see it differently.

Sarah Alam - 5 months ago

@Sarah Alam Hmm maybe, I think I didn’t think that thru(I was very happy to finally have kept the shower thought aside)

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

@Sarah Alam The eye is fully understood in biology, mostly

The brain isn’t, so most of the questions we make on this topic won’t have answers now, although it’s in our heads

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

@Jason Gomez Exactly, for all we know there could be ghosts of our ancestors navigating and working the brain.

Sarah Alam - 5 months ago

@Sarah Alam Free will might be an illusion, but I don’t want the reality to be this

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

@Jason Gomez Once we die we will get to control someone else. We can do whatever we want to them, as long as we make sure he/she doesn’t die so we lose control again.

Sarah Alam - 5 months ago

@Sarah Alam I hope so you guys know Science (leaving mathematics) is a belief that might be the truth or not.

Siddharth Chakravarty - 5 months ago

@Siddharth Chakravarty It’s a very good approximation of the truth

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

@Jason Gomez And how do you say that?

Siddharth Chakravarty - 5 months ago

@Siddharth Chakravarty That's the most probable truth ¯_(ツ)_/¯ (calculate the probability yourself)

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

@Jason Gomez For calculating probability, you need the no. of outcomes, and the bias of each outcome, but for science, you don't know anything for sure, did you create the world, maybe you did, you don't remember maybe you didn't what are really the laws of this world? These are just probabilities and truth is just diminished.

Siddharth Chakravarty - 5 months ago

@Jason Gomez Newton’s laws were probably true, now general relativity might be probably true, quantum mechanics is probably true, you can’t measure these probabilities because it’s not a probability infact, it’s either the truth or not, we can just calculate the probability from what we know and observe, the more a theory predicts and is shown to be true it’s more likely to us to be true

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

@Jason Gomez Yes, you are uncertain if this world is true or not as it seems, thus similarly we can't be certain about the laws of the world it is just a belief, what if the next second the laws of the world change?

Siddharth Chakravarty - 5 months ago

@Siddharth Chakravarty Thats why science is the most probable truth, the laws have seemingly never changed till now with time so it is most likely not to either, could happen but science is most likely to stay constant from previous observations

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

@Jason Gomez That is very wrong, don't confuse mathematically probability with human intuition so much. Suppose I give you a coin, and you have to say me is it biased or not just by flipping the coin and seeing its outcomes. Even if it is heads million times you cannot say it's biased as even a fair coin has a very close to 0 but non-zero chance of getting heads million times but by human intuition, one would want to say it's impossible which is wrong.

Siddharth Chakravarty - 5 months ago

@Jason Gomez You might want to learn about probability distributions then, I can be 99% certain that the coin is less biased than 1% after enough throws, knowing exactly might be impossible but approximations do the job

Jason Gomez - 5 months ago

@Jason Gomez I said for sure, I never mentioned the word approximations. Approximations can sometimes go horribly wrong, what if the coin then comes tails a million times, lol.
