# Not old enough to do math

Hello brilliant.org,

Having to be at least 13 to do math problems is depressing. I may potentially work with a middle school math club next year and I'd only be able to have half of them use your lovely site.

It feels like a "CYA" move since there is obviously nothing age-inappropriate about math problems.

Granted I don't know the legal realities you have to deal with. But is there any hope here? Can you just disable all social features for them?

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

• Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
• Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
• Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.

Hi! Can 2 or more students share one brilliant subscription? Thanks!

- 1 year, 1 month ago

Hi Kevin, there are a few possible workarounds:

• You can have the students' parents create an account for the student to use.
• The parents can email us to approve account creation for their child, and we can create an account for the student. If you would like us to do this, let me know and I'll put you in touch with my colleague who handles that.
• We are working on joining a pilot program that would allow us to sign up students under 13. It is going to take another couple of months to get approved, but that may happen before the start of your math club.

Happy to hear we may be useful to your math club!

I dunno as son of a law professor I laboriously read over all terms/services and it says the minimum age is 14. :P

That might be a typo. Will look into it, thanks.

I don't think so because it's repeated multiples times ahem @Bradan Litzinger. :D

Oh, wonderful! Thanks!

Is there any support for the "coach : student" relationship here, so I could check if they're doing their "homework"?

- 7 years, 1 month ago

The closest thing we have to that right now is that you could check each student's Activity feed, but that's not particularly convenient if you have a big group. Do you have a simple feature set in mind that you would like to see implemented?

We don't have anything planned for classroom support specifically, but if there are general ergonomic things that might be useful for everyone, we're open to suggestions.

@Kevin Bourrillion -- we're working on a prototype for exactly this. Send me an email at silas@brilliant.org if you'd like to see what we have so far. I'd really love your feedback.

Hello! Did this "pilot program" happen, I wonder?

- 6 years, 10 months ago

Hi Kevin, we were recently approved for the pilot. I believe it will take us a few weeks to get through the certification process, and I'll (try to remember to) update this thread when it's complete.

Update? :-) Thanks!

- 6 years, 7 months ago

The process is excruciatingly slow, since the penalties for violating these laws are severe. We are nearing a possible solution.

Hi - my 16 y/o really struggles with basic maths concepts - is there a way I can check what he has covered on brilliant.org if I sign him up?

I think the confusion and the issue about the age range has more to do with legal requirements set up for children under the age of 13 and what information can be gathered and the lawsuits filed by the FCC under CIPA. I don’t think Brilliant has an issue with younger patrons with respect to the content but rather the legal problems any internet services provider runs into with CIPA. Sorry kids! Your parents can vote to make changes though.
