I am expecting between 110 and 120 . Maharashtra what about you ? I think cut off should drop this year

Rohit Shah - 3 years ago

Which cutoff do you mean , the minimum score or "u can give inpho" score?

Mvs Saketh - 3 years ago

u can give inpho score. What were your marks ?

Rohit Shah - 3 years ago

@Rohit Shah Oh well i am expecting 160-170 west bengal . The potentiometer questions killed me . West bengal. But i saw in hsbsc webdite that the "u can give inpho" score is 80% of the average top ten scorers... and it is not state dependend this time, and considering that the top ten people would certainly be like 90% so shouldnt the cutoff be higher( though i do agree that this year i felt they have inserted too much experiment questions , and made multiple correct choice too easy and the rest of the paper lengthy) ( so cutoff should fall) (pattern of paper changed considerably)

@Mvs Saketh Just checked the new rules last years toppers were around 200 so say rank 10 is about 190 then avg would be 195. Then you would be above MI if you score above 156 and above MAS would be 97. But this year paper was worse so expecting MI to be 150 and MAS to be 90. What do u have to say ? How much did other level 5 ers score ? Can somebody start a post for nsec @Krishna Ar

Rohit Shah - 3 years ago

@Rohit Shah Well last year paper was too easy, and it is likely that even the toppers dont give so much of a shit about potentiometer and time was a critical factor.. so yes MAS should fall below 150 and around 145 maybe. I do know others score (expected) but we can draw a better comparision after knowing Ronaks score i suppose ..... @Ronak Agarwal

@Mvs Saketh MAS is 89..MI is 144

Tushar Gopalka - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Tushar Gopalka yes i have seen it,, i crossed MAS but still pretty behind to hope for selection,, i have lost it, best of luck if you have got selected,

@Tushar Gopalka i am trying to look at the results page, but it is not loading, btw, how much you got @Tushar Gopalka ? thanks for informing btw,

Mvs Saketh - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Mvs Saketh I don't know why it is showing 124, I will qualify as west Bengal quota is 19. How much is your score?

Tushar Gopalka - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Tushar Gopalka 117, wait quota is 19? are you sure, last time only 6 students were selected right?

Mvs Saketh - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Mvs Saketh Yes, in IAPT page, you can see that West bengal quota is 19 for this year....

Tushar Gopalka - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Tushar Gopalka oh thanks, so there is some hope for me right, rank 10?

Mvs Saketh - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Mvs Saketh Tell me your centre code and roll number I will tell your marks.

Ronak Agarwal - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Ronak Agarwal already seen, how much you got?

Mvs Saketh - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Mvs Saketh 119, I really don't like this state representation clause, there are only 17 selections from rajasthan where as there are 55 selections from uttar pradesh, I saw the result of uttar pradesh they are getting too low, the cutoff is unbelieveably low, and that thing really makes me unhappy, the cutoff for rajasthan for second stage is 128 out of 240.

Ronak Agarwal - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Ronak Agarwal true that,, some states have too many selections, but this time i dont think theres an individual state cutoff,, also can you please tell me west bengals quota? and are you getting selected (means within the top 17)

Although its true that state division is unfair, we cant really blame them bro, we should have prepared better and performed an all round preparation to cross the MI , let us just consider it a lesson, whether we get selected or not, cause even if we do get selected(which is unlikely for me as i got state rank 10), it will be more because of others losing rather than us winning

Mvs Saketh - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Mvs Saketh I have the stats (referenced from the list of students scoring above MAS) ,

There are only 44 students from UP scoring above MAS score with highest score 128 and lowest score 89(of course since it's the MAS) and if we believe the Proportional representation clause all of them are getting selected just imagine a student scoring 89 is getting selected for second stage of olympiad !!!

Also think about students in Andhra Pradesh with students scoring exceptionally high, there state cutoff is coming out to be 150 , imagine you have to score 150 !! to get selected in second stage.( Of 9 out of top 10 are from Andhra Pradesh). You may be wondering how I got rank and cutoff's

What I actually did is to download the PDF files and converted them into excel spreadsheet and sorted them to get the rank list and cutoff list.

There is also another thing to consider, that Kota has become a Hub for preparation for IIT-JEE and other similar competitive entrance exams hence people not from Rajasthan are also coming in Kota and giving the first stage physics olympiad exam, the state quota of states are decided on the basis of populations but these things are taken into consideration.

So what are your views on state quota for selection in physics olympiad. @Mvs Saketh

Ronak Agarwal - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Mvs Saketh I am blaming myself,(For not preparing for time constraints) but still it's a once in a lifetime oppurtunity and it is very sad to think that I am not getting selected even though I deserved to do so.

I have prepared for tough questions but not prepared for doing easy questions in a given time.Just imagine a paper with sufficiently hard subjective problems, and we would be having a greater chances for getting selected. Why are children from UP getting the previlage of getting selected with extremely low marks, what wrong we have done. I only think one thing and that is I deserved to be selected against people getting lower marks than me and getting selected.

I missed the rajasthan cutoff by 9 marks.

Ronak Agarwal - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Ronak Agarwal i do agree bro, i wanted this oppurtunity too, i wanted INPHO too,, this oppurtunity had really great career oppurtunities in physics and i wanted it,, and now i failed , because of silly mistakes, because of not being fast enough, , . imagine the loss, and imagine the humiliation i am presently feeling,, because even if by any remote chance i qualify, it will be because of state quota and not my skill. i understand it,,, and yes if there were sufficiently hard subjective questions,, maybe i would have done better, if there were lesser problems, or harder but less about practical so much, and stuff like thermopiles and shit,,, But then there are people in AP who have really rocked the score,, they faced the same paper too, so it is my deficiency ,

as for you, we all know your skill , anyone who has seen your challenges in mechanics will know that you got extreme aptitude, and yes i understand your loss,, well i can only say that you buckle up for IITJEE in which you have a really good chance considering your maths and physics skills,, and a single exam cant determine what you are or where you gonna be,, just keep going, bro, and bigger oppurtunities will come, The world needs brains like yours, and its talent will be recognised sooner or later :)

Mvs Saketh - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Mvs Saketh Yes, you will be selected most probably due to quota, me too but due to quota..No merit..

Tushar Gopalka - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Ronak Agarwal How do you know the cut-off...I mean is quota system true..that is I need to be above MAS score and be within top 19 in WEST BENGAL and I get selected?

Tushar Gopalka - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Tushar Gopalka If you score above MI score that is 144 for physics then you are automatically getting selected.

Ronak Agarwal - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Tushar Gopalka He means that , if a state has 19 as selection quota, then the 19th dudes score can be called as the cutoff

Mvs Saketh - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Mvs Saketh Then, we get selected, right. You and me from WB?

Tushar Gopalka - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Tushar Gopalka maybe, if what we think is the rules is actually the rules, based on what i read in the hsbsc site, it seems so,, that they will take 19 students from WB minimum, and since only two crossed MI , so other than them,, they gonna choose 17, and since we are within the top 17, we should get selected,, but lets just wait till 30 th december to be sure

Mvs Saketh - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Mvs Saketh No HBCSE has also explained these criteria in detail, what happens is that for example state quota is 25 and there are 10 students scoring above MI then only 15 further selections are to be made , but if in a state, state quota is 25 and there are 35 people scoring above MI then all of them are going to be selected and in that case no further selections are to be made.

Ronak Agarwal - 2 years, 11 months ago

@Ronak Agarwal Yes thats what i said,,19 is state quota and only 2 are above MI, so 17 selections are to be made

@Mvs Saketh Hi Saketh.

This paper includes the syllabus of both class 11 and 12. Is there any Physics Olympiad for class 11 students (which includes only class 11 syllabus)?

@Karthik Sharma Hi Kartik. I don't have much knowledge about NESP. I came to know about this exam from this note. So I just searched about it on google and found previous year paper of that. Other than that I don't have any information about this exam. :)

@Satvik Pandey I am sorry but there isnt, the only two olympiads are nsep and apho which have both 11 and 12 stuff... however you can have fun by solving only the 11 th problems from olympiad papers available online.
