# Proofathon Calculus Competition

Imgur

Greetings, proofathoners! I was recently inducted as a problem writer in the Proofathon contest, and it really is hard work creating quality problems! That's why we would all appreciate it if you could participate in the upcoming Proofathon Calculus Competition!

It starts tomorrow (6/27/2014) at midnight and ends on the 6th of July, 11:59 PM (all EST). So get going, and sign up here!

We look forward to seeing future proofathoners heading our way!

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

• Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
• Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
• Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.

How did the competition go, everybody?

- 6 years, 3 months ago

Please keep all posts on-topic! Any off-topic posts will be deleted. @David Lee Please keep this in mind. If too many off-topic posts are made, this thread will be closed.

Ahaan, this is a forum for Proofathoners to connect. I think you should be lenient with your moderation. Off-topic comments should be fine.

@Daniel Liu , I wanted a clarification regarding question 3 wherein it is asked to obtain the two functions. On integrating, I get some unknown, arbitrary constants for which there isn't any condition to obtain their specific values. So how should I give the answer?

- 6 years, 3 months ago

This is standard in maths competitions, especially in differential (functional) equations. You should say "for some arbitrary constants [blah blah blah...]"

Hope this helps! :)

- 6 years, 3 months ago

You may find a specific pair of functions, or a family of possible functions. I'm not sure, since I didn't make the problem, but I think that is what you have to do.

- 6 years, 3 months ago

@Daniel Liu hI Daniel i have actually never participated in this contest but how good should you be to participate in this contest?

- 6 years, 3 months ago

Yeah, you can easily pick off 1 or 2 problems without any Calculus knowledge! $\Tiny \text{[deleted by moderator]}$

- 6 years, 3 months ago

@Finn Hulse why does it say deleted by a moderator

- 6 years, 3 months ago

I do not know.

- 6 years, 3 months ago

It doesn't matter! You can still just do the competition for fun. So you have nothing to lose; just join!

- 6 years, 3 months ago

In problem 6, do we have an independence assumption of having that property ?

- 6 years, 3 months ago

Yes.

- 6 years, 3 months ago

Please incorporate that into the problem statement.

- 6 years, 3 months ago

Cody replies that it's implied in the problem statement.

- 6 years, 3 months ago

No. The problem only specifies the marginals. There could be potentially many joint distributions that have the same marginals.

- 6 years, 3 months ago

That problem bugs me. $\Tiny \text{[Deleted, No hints please!]}$ but it gave me an obvious and stupid answer. :P

- 6 years, 3 months ago

Okay, I'll incorporate it into the problem statement.

- 6 years, 3 months ago

I'm sorry, if you really have an issue with this contact @Cody Johnson about it. He's the one who can edit. I can't really do anything about it :/

- 6 years, 3 months ago

The competition starts today! Good luck to all $\ddot\smile$

- 6 years, 3 months ago

Congratulations Daniel Liu! :)

I am definitely going to participate in this contest.

Nice to meet you Daniel Lee. Your little bro is pretty pro. :D

- 6 years, 3 months ago

Daniel won't like that

- 6 years, 3 months ago

Never mind then Daniel your little brother sucks at math. Better? :D

- 6 years, 3 months ago

Why does this have so many upvotes

- 6 years, 3 months ago

Because it's funny :)

Sibling feuds are funny.

- 6 years, 3 months ago

Never been a greater family comedy than sibling feuds. :D

- 6 years, 3 months ago

Are you a mixture of David and Daniel? :D

- 6 years, 3 months ago

Daniel Liu recently got married to David Lee.

- 6 years, 3 months ago

Yeah he my bro (so mean $\ddot \smile$)
