# Ratings Errors Messageboard

I am starting this note for you to report cases of when your rating acts weirdly. This applies to cases like:

1. Rating falls when I answer correctly
2. Rating increases when I answer incorrectly
3. My rating in a certain topic changed but I didn't do any problems in that topic.

Please provide further information, like the date (timeframe) that is involved, the question title (a link would be appreciated), if you answered the question correctly or wrongly, and the change in rating that you experienced. Please be as specific as you can, as that helps me trace down the issue. An example format is,

On April 10th, Maximize An Almost-Factorable Expression, I answered correctly in my second try, my Algebra rating dropped by 20 points.

or

From March 20 to March 30, I didn't do any Algebra problems, but my rating changed.

I will respond via email with an explanation, and I would ask that you reply back.

This is not for a discussion of how you want ratings to act.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

• Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
• Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
• Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.

I have sent you an email. Please reply and let me know if you agree or disagree with the series of events. I would like to understand the scenario better, and prevent this from occurring.

@Calvin Lin, I sent an e-mail to you about a week ago. Haven't received a reply yet.

I searched my inbox and do not see any email from you. My email address is Calvin@Brilliant.org.

I answered it correctly on my first try, but my Number Theory rating stayed at 1777.

Hi Nanayaranaraknas Vahdam,

Problems which do not have a rating (like this one) will not affect your rating.

Staff - 6 years, 1 month ago

Thank you!

A few days ago, my algebra rating dropped from 2041 to 1984 on its own, I had not solved any sums related to algebra.

- 6 years, 1 month ago

I have sent you an email.

The change of ratings occurred in the month of March. During that period, you answered several Algebra problems, and got a few wrong. Some of these problems were in the practice section, and we have since stopped letting the practice section affect ratings.

Ok.

My Algebra rating is going haywire... I answer a question correctly it shows my rating as 1551... answer the next question correctly ( on the first try) my rating becomes 1489.. then it stays like that for a couple of questions and then reverts back to 1551 and then back to 1489... Please help.

I have started looking into this. I have sent you an email to ask for more information regarding the scenario. Please reply to help me understand it better.

The problem was resolved shortly after I posted the above problem by itself. Thank you for the help.

@Calvin Lin I had a rating of 1840 in NT. I missed "A clever 4-term sequence" (which is Level 5) twice, but got it right on the third time (forgot about common ratios of 1.5 and the like). Anyways, my rating dropped to 1838. D:

Hello Sir,

Few days prior i had a Level 4 in Quantitative Finance and now I am level 3 in it and that too without solving any questions of that section. Can you tell why this has happened

- 5 years, 2 months ago

Note that Quantitative Finance is a new topic, and as such the levels / ratings (of both members and problems) are subject to change without any notice, as we figure out how they should work. As such, you will not see it appear in the Stats page as yet, and detailed information about your performance will not be available. You will still get generic information like your level, displayed on your profile / hover card.

Staff - 5 years, 2 months ago

ohk.. thanks a lot..!!

- 5 years, 2 months ago

I don't clearly remember when I last did but it's actually been a long time when I tried a Quantitative Finance problem, but my rating changed recently.

P.S : Although I don't deserve to remain on Level 4 (now ratings changed and I am on Lvl 3) and neither I want it to be done so but actually I just wanted to report this error because I know very little of this subject and I look forward to learn it soon (after my high school graduation).

You know, I checked my Stats recently, and its behavior didn't seem quite right. Now that I'm notified, I'll pay more attention. I just wonder why some of my Levels seem to be falling even as I'm always solving problems.

- 5 years, 2 months ago

On the stats page, if you scroll down you can see your "problem by problem" rating changes. This way, you can easily track why something seems strange. (Unfortunately, rating changes due to updating the correct answer are not displayed as yet, so it might led to a strange result at times).

Staff - 5 years, 2 months ago

I see now that it helps to pay close attention to "problem by problem" ratings to understand what's happening to my ratings, if I'm interested in efficiently raising my Level in any particular subject. But of course, most of the time I'm not thinking about my Levels, and so, you know, it's like neglecting maintenance of real property. You could get surprise water damage.

- 5 years, 2 months ago

If you're interested in effectively raising your ratings/level, then simply correctly answer the hardest problems that you can.

(off topic) Oh ... water damage .... the bane of my current existence.

So like 4 months back, there was a pipe in the roof of my apartment building that burst (was old, due to be checked/replaced). Water collected over time and finally lifted up the roof, which then led to a cascading waterfall down through several apartments. Thankfully, we were not drenched, though our neighbors were. We still had some water damage, so they had to rip up our bathroom + bedroom wall.

And now, they are finally coming in to fix things up, but will require 3 weeks to do so! So i'm currently confined to working from home, to deal with these contractors.

Staff - 5 years, 2 months ago

Luckily, I never had the experience of living in a place with that kind of water damage. However, I did once own an industrial building that had such a bad roof that whenever it rained, it rained harder inside than outside. And it was a MACHINE shop! Now, that should be an interesting problem---how could it rain harder inside a building than outside? Whenever I had to go inside my building during a rain, I was always reminded of the movie, "The Illustrated Man", based on short stories by Ray Bradbury, "The Long Rain" in particular.

Three weeks to do rip up your bathroom & bedroom walls and do them over? Sounds like the same kind of contractors that I have working for me. My deepest condolences. I just read something somewhere that says genius is easily bothered by distractions--are you feeling distracted?

- 5 years, 2 months ago

Oh, right now i'm still waiting for them to come in. They are always coming in "tomorrow", which irritates me.

I don't get distracted too easily (as long as they don't need me around), and I have things set up so that I'm facing into a wall / corner. The main distraction will be my cat, since he loves to sit on my lap / laptop.

At the expense of taking up your messageboard space, I have to tell you this joke. A Jewish fellow in late1930s Germany dropped off a pair of shoes for some work at the local shoe repair shop. The events leading up to war made the shoes a forgotten matter, and he ended up being in a Polish camp, liberated by the Soviets, only to find himself behind the wall in East Germany. Many years later, when the wall finally came down, he returned to his old neighborhood, seeing it changed beyond recognition. But the old shoe shop was still there, and, surprisingly, the old proprietor was still working there! After tears and laughter, the Jew jokingly asked the proprietor, "Hey, remember that I dropped off a pair of shoes? How are they coming along?" The proprietor said, wait, he'll check his records, and then went into his storage room. He came back and said, "They'll be ready tomorrow".
