I feel like the answer and explanation are incorrect. Choose either chest would be able to determine where 100 gold is.

From the question, we can deduce the following - A must have either 50 gold/50 silver or 100 silver. - B must have either 100 gold or 100 silver. - C must have either 50 gold/50 silver or 100 gold.

Suppose we choose chest B: - If the coin is gold, B must be gold. (A = 100 silver, B = 100 gold, C = 50 gold/ 50 silver) - If the coin is silver, C must be gold since A couldn't be gold. (A = 50 gold/ 50 silver, B = 100 silver, C = 100 gold)

Suppose we choose chest A: - If the coin is 50 gold/50 silver, C must be gold since C couldn't be silver. (A = 50 gold/ 50 silver, B = 100 silver, C = 100 gold) - If the coin is silver, B must be gold since B couldn't be 50 gold/50 silver. (A =100 silver, B = 100 gold, C = 50 gold/ 50 silver)

Suppose we choose chest C: - If the coin is gold, C must be gold. (A = 50 gold/ 50 silver, B = 100 silver, C = 100 gold) - If the coin is 50 gold/50 silver, B must be gold since B couldn't be 50 gold/50 silver. (A = 100 silver, B = 100 gold, C = 50 gold/ 50 silver)

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

• Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
• Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
• Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.

Hi Chayanon.

In the future, if you have concerns about a problem's wording/clarity/etc., you can report the problem. See how here.

Staff - 7 months, 2 weeks ago

But if a member isn't sure about a report, shouldn't they consult other members first? You know, because the report might be a mistake, and more work for staff, whereas members can explain easily as they have time and they are also mostly happy to help.

Hi Percy, I'm just pointing out to Chayanon that there's a proper channel to submit their disputes to the course quizzes.

Ok :)

I believe you are mistaken with the notion of 50 gold/50 silver, as it doesn't mean that the coins are made of 50% of each metal, rather meaning that the chest has 50 gold coins, and 50 silver coins. We know that it cannot be A, as the labels are incorrect. Chest C may contain 100 gold coins, or 50 silver coins and 50 gold coins. If you pick C, and get a gold coin, you can't be sure it is the 100 gold chest, as there is half a chance of the coin being silver or gold if the chest contains 50 silver and 50 gold coins. Since this doesn't clear your doubts, let's check chest B. The rest of the solution must be clear now as to how Chest B is correct, Hope this helps! @Chayanon Tonsai
