I have recently solved quite a few unlocked problem sets but have not been credited with those many stars. The site says get all 3 correct to win 1/2/3 stars...
Please help me, and/or correct me if I am wrong in understanding the starring system..

The stars indicate the top level of the sets of problems in that technique that you have gotten all 3 questions right on. If you answered all 3 of the Basic problems correctly, you will get 1 star. After that, if you answered all 3 of the intermediate problems correctly, you will get 1 additional star for a total of 2. If you worked one the advanced problems, but didn't get all 3 correct the first time, you will not be awarded your third star. If on the second set you get all 3 right, you will get your third star. If on your third attempt, you get all 3 right again, you will not get additional stars as you already have all 3 stars.

Got that. But I think it would have been a great idea if we would have been awarded extra stars for completing extra sets in first attempt.
