# Why can't we make friends on brilliant without using facebook?

I don't have facebook account neither I want to create one. But why can't I add friends on brilliant without using facebook?

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

• Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
• Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
• Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
• Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Hi Snehal,

To be honest the only reason is that we simply haven't built another way yet, but we are hurrying to fix that :) Soon you will be able to conveniently stay in touch with people you meet on Brilliant, but are not Facebook friends with. Currently, you can invite people to join Brilliant even if they do not have a Facebook account. When you click the "invite others" button on the main page, you are given the option to email an invite link to someone if you want. On that invite page they have the option to signup via email, and not through a Facebook account.

If all goes well, Brilliant will be in the app stores soon.

Do you use Brilliant on a mobile phone now (through the browser)?

Hello Peter, many people who don't have a fb account are my good friends as well as good students of mathematics and it would be fun to compete with them...I'm sure many of us face the same dilemma... We hope you'll come up with some way to cope up with this...

Hi Kshitji,

You now have the option of using your email contacts to invite people to join Brilliant. Further more, you can now compete on a weekly and monthly basis with anyone one on Brilliant whose email you know.

Hi Peter.. Thank you for adding this feature.. But I think this feature is going to be improved still if I am not wrong. For example, yet I cannot search people using their names or email id or when I go to somebody's profile page, I cannot request him/her to be my friend. Also the friendship feature seems to be one way as of now. The people that I have in my friend list didn't get any request from me and were still added to my list. I would like to know when all these things are going to be fixed. Thank you :)

Hi Peter - the second part of your reply sounds very promising (for someone who can't connect through facebook) - can you explain how we can compete against others via their email?

I know which email my 'friends' (students) have used to sign up, but can't figure out how to connect with them.

Something like this sounds great - even something similar to this page (which seems to be from a previous competition) would be amazing.

Thank you Peter.. Nice to hear from you that the feature I was looking for is going to be there. :) So after it becomes available, would I also be able to search members using their usernames as well as message them through brilliant only?

Yes, although all of those things will not happen at once, we will release each functionality as we develop it.

Can not wait for that new feature. I hate facebook, they want to register my handlightsaber as a deadly weapon.

I was wondering about this too. People who solve maths and physics problems recreationally stereotypically have no social life XD

Hehe.. thats not true at all.. but it is true that there are much better ways to keep social life active than using facebook! Personally what I think (and do) is that by closing internet for sometime and actually going somewhere with friends and chatting is much more nice than doing facebook to keep social life active.

in my case I only have people i've met in real life on my facebook account. If I wanted to start friending people in brilliant, then I'd have to create another facebook account.

I've managed to bring some friends from facebook here, but I don't necessarily want to show my personal life to the people I met here, in here we just share science as a common interest, they don't need to see my kids pictures, etc.

can't wait for friendship to be implemented within brilliant.
