Xuming's Synthetic Geometry Group

The focus of this group would be to understand how to approach Geometry proofs that you see on an Olympiad. Most of the problems discussed will be proof-based, and calculations are mainly to build up the fundamentals. Information from the sessions will be made available on Brilliant, whether it is through notes or wikis. We are looking for approximately 20 people to form an active vibrate group on Slack chat. You are expected to spend several hours a week discussing the problems and writing up explanations.

This is the plan for the sessions:

  • Xuming will announce a certain technique to focus on for 2 weeks. This would be either a skill (like Ceva's Theorem) or a chapter (like Circumcenter).
  • We will meet for 1 hour on XXXX (fixed time, PST), in which we will discuss the technique and work through several problems.
  • For the remainder of the week, you will challenge each other to solve a proof problem (details to be announced).
  • At the end of the first week, we will collate these problems and solutions, and then discuss what is the best way to organize this information to be viewed by others (similar to wiki collaboration parties)
  • By the end of the second week, the wiki/note would be completed and will be shared to the community / featured on the homepage.

To be selected for this group, you have to:

  1. Create a note with title of "[Synthetic Geometry Group] - (your name)'s proposal".
  2. Present 2 Geometry proof problems. If at a loss of what to do, you can focus on Ceva's Theorem, Angle Bisector Theorem or Ptolemy's Theorem.
  3. Manage the discussion on your note.
  4. Engage with the discussion on similar notes.

At the end of September, we will make the selection for the group. Note that continued membership in this group is dependent on your active participation.

  Easy Math Editor

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

I was too busy doing a necessary biological function called sleeping. Couldn't we have done this 4 hours earlier?

The 2 geometry proof problems need to be original?

Nihar Mahajan - 4 years, 2 months ago

No, the problems can come from experience, contests, or your own. Exploit the internet! there are tons of worksheets and pdfs out there that focus on those topics.
