An incomplete board

Consider a chess board. Suppose you have dominos, each with the exact size of two squares of the board.   Note that, in this way, we can cover the whole board with exactly 32 pieces of domino. When they are removed from the board two diagonally opposite houses, it is still possible to cover it with 31 pieces of domino?
