Bicycle Kinematics

Classical Mechanics Level pending

There are two cyclists on a straight bike path. Cyclist 1 is initially stationary as Cyclist 2 passes from behind at a constant speed of \(5 \text{ m/s}\). Cyclist 1 begins accelerating forward at a constant rate of \(\alpha\) when Cyclist 2 is 30 meters ahead. He accelerates for a period of time, and then decelerates at a rate of \(\alpha\) until he simultaneously matches the speed and position of Cyclist 2 30 seconds after beginning to move. Determine the value of \(\alpha\) in \(\text{m/s{^{2}\).
