Can 90% Of People Do Worse Than Average?

Daniel Hirschberg was looking at the data on the number of followers that each person has on Brilliant. For each person, he records down the number of followers that they have in the first column. Then, he records down the average number of followers that the person's followers have in the second column.

Dan was initially surprised to find that the number in the first column was almost always smaller than the number in the second column, with a small percentage of exceptions like Anish, Anqi and Sreejato. He then thought about it some, and it made sense to him.

What is the most likely reason for this?
