A \(\color{blue}{100}\) g sample of methane hydrate, in the form known as clathrate structure II, \((\ce{CH4})_x(\ce{H2O})_y\) was burnt in excess oxygen in a sealed container. After the reaction had completed and the products had cooled, \(\color{blue}{116.92}\) g of water was recovered from the container, and the gas, when shaken with excess lime water, gave \(\color{blue}{84.73}\) g of \(\ce{CaCO3}\).

The molar mass of the hydrate and \(\ce{CaCO3}\) are \(\color{blue}{2835.18}\) g/mol and \(\color{blue}{100.09}\) g/mol, respectively.
