Sea snails live in the bottom of the ocean, attached to the ground with their 'sticky leg'. Their shape can be approximated to be a hemisphere.

If a snail of radius \(3~\mbox{cm}\) is attached to the ground in a \(3~\mbox{m}\) deep sea, what is the magnitude of the vertical force in N with which the water presses on it?

Details and assumptions

  • The density of water is \(1000~\mbox{kg/m}^3\).
  • There's a clever (and easier) way to do this, and there's a hard way.
  • The acceleration of gravity is \(-9.8~m/s^2\).
