X-alkanes

Define a class of organic compounds namely \(\text{X} \) - alkanes - \(n\) where \(\text{X} \) is a functional group. Basically such compounds contain a straight chain alkane (i.e. with no branching ) with \( n+2 \) carbon atoms and one of hydrogen atoms on each of carbons except the terminal ones are replaced by the \(\text{X} \) functional group.

Therefore, \(\text{Cl} \) - alkane - \(2\) is basically \(2,3 - \) dichloro butane and \(\text{OH} \) - alkane - \(3\) is \(2,3,4 -\) trihydroxy pentane.

Now, \(\text{COOH} \) - alkane - \(N\) is treated with excess \(\text{AgNO}_3 \) to give \(0.1\) moles of a salt which gives about \(54 \text{ g} \) of white coloured residue.

Estimate the molar weight of \(\text{Br} \) - alkane - \(N\) in grams.

Details and Assumptions:

  • The molar weights of \(\text{C} \), \(\text{H}_2 \), \(\text{O}_2 \) and \(\text{Br}_2 \) are \(12, 2, 32 \) and \(160\) grams, respectively.
