data mining
Data mining is a the is the method of finding irregularities, patterns and relationships within large data sets to predict outcomes with the use of Machine Learning.
Example Question 1
Target Used Data mining to figure out a teen girl was pregnant before her father did!
With the use of patterns, they found a trend in their data on the baby registry data set that women on the buying larger quantities of unscented lotion around the beginning of their second trimester.
Another pattern noted that sometime in the first 20 weeks, pregnant women loaded up on supplements like calcium, magnesium, and zinc
From the datasets and the patterns, Target would compile a pregnancy score base on the customer's actions.
With that pregnancy score being high for this teenage girl
Target mailed coupons for baby items to her.Because of that action, her father when down to a target near him and he yelled at a manager for them sending coupons for baby items to his daughter, but the manager didn’t have any idea what the man was talking about but the manager apologized.
Later the girl's father talked with his daughter, and she told him that she was due in August he apologized for being angry at the manager.
Target used Data mining to make that connection. It caused some problems, but overall you can see some uses for it.[
