Parents & Families

You do not need to choose the perfect Brilliant math course for your child. When a learner signs up, Brilliant administers a lightweight math diagnostic and places them in a course the product is confident they have the skills to begin. As the learner completes lessons, Brilliant uses more performance data and level checks to help them move ahead when they are ready. How Brilliant chooses the starting course The signup diagnostic gives Brilliant an initial picture of the learner’s current math skills. Brilliant uses that result to recommend a starting course based on readiness, not age or school grade alone. The goal is to start the learner with material they have the prerequisites to understand. Parents do not need to audit the entire course catalog, test every prerequisite, or determine the exact match to a school syllabus before getting started. How Brilliant moves learners ahead The initial placement is only the beginning. Brilliant keeps learning from the learner’s work in the product. When this happens What Brilliant does The learner signs up A lightweight diagnostic helps place them in an appropriate starting course. The learner is breezing through lessons Brilliant will suggest accelerating ahead and uses level checks to confirm readiness. The learner chooses to jump ahead Brilliant asks them to pass the level check that gates the later material. This progressive approach means placement becomes more informed as Brilliant sees more of the learner’s work. A child does not have to remain in an easy course simply because it was the initial recommendation. What do parents need to do? Very little: Let the learner complete the signup diagnostic independently. Outside help can make the starting recommendation less useful. Have them begin the recommended course. It is a starting point, not a permanent track. Use the jump-ahead option if the work is consistently too easy. The level check will confirm whether the learner is ready. Give the product time to learn from their work. Brilliant can make better progression decisions as the learner completes more lessons and checks. You can still browse Brilliant’s course catalog or choose a topic connected to school or personal interest. The diagnostic simply means families do not have to solve placement on their own before learning begins. How can I tell whether the level feels right? Too easy: The learner moves quickly and is rarely challenged. Use the jump-ahead option and take the required level check. Productive challenge: The learner makes some mistakes but can use feedback and continue. Stay with the course. Too difficult: Missing prerequisites repeatedly prevent the learner from engaging with the main idea. Try earlier material or contact support@brilliant.org for help. Parents do not need to monitor every answer. The useful question is whether the learner is engaged, appropriately challenged, and able to continue. Does Brilliant’s placement match school grade levels? Not necessarily. School curricula differ, and a learner can be ahead in one topic while needing earlier material in another. Brilliant places learners by demonstrated readiness within its own math curriculum rather than assigning one overall grade level. For a complete map of Brilliant’s current paths and topics, see What math does Brilliant cover?. For general school-grade expectations, see What math should my child know at each grade?. Is this a formal school placement test? No. Brilliant’s diagnostic and level checks determine where a learner should work within Brilliant. They do not assign a school grade, award course credit, issue a transcript, or decide whether a school should place a child in a later class. Frequently asked questions Do I need to choose a course before my child starts? No. The signup diagnostic gives Brilliant the information needed to make an initial placement. Your child can begin there and adjust as the product learns more from their work. What if the recommended course is too easy? The learner can use the jump-ahead option. Brilliant will ask them to pass the relevant level check before unlocking later material. Can my child move ahead without completing every lesson? Yes, when the learner passes the required level check. They do not have to complete material they have already demonstrated they understand. What if my child wants later coursework or deeper enrichment? See How to help your child get ahead in math for acceleration and Is Brilliant good for enrichment? for harder or broader work without necessarily moving to a later course.
