# Exponential Functions

An exponential function is one in which the independent variable is an exponent. Thus $$f(x) = x^2$$ is not an exponential function, but $$g(x) = 2^x$$ is an exponential function.

Working with exponential functions requires that we are very familiar with rules of exponents.
