What should be the color change when a flame test is carried out on magnesium?

*one of my teachers suggest "it should give a brilliant white flame but not in ordinary low temperature flames" whereas another suggests that "it should give no change in flame color regardless of the temperature". Both are very respected teachers so could anyone please resolve this confusion of mine? And please try to take the trouble of adding a reasonable explanation of your answer and your source of information. Thank you.
