# My Chemistry OCSC experience

I am posting this note to share my experience about my camp that I am still attending, my theory and practical examinations are over and I have no chance to qualify for the top four but still this camp is a great experience for me. You meet with some of the brightest students of India there.

Unlike the KVPY camp this camp had many things Fun, lectures, hostel life( I haven't watched T.V. over a week and their's no A.C in my room), eating at canteens that serve seriously bad food, but the best part was the fun part.

We did play many games like various games in cards, UNO and my favourite Badminton, we also played mafia with around 20 people together. There were people from different parts of the country , among some of my friends there was two from kolkata, one from banglore , one from orissa one from nagpur, mumbai etc

Another interesting aspect was the lectures, there were well respected people giving lectures on various topics like Chemical Potential, Steady State Approximations, Protecting groups Structures and properties of silicates and Borosilicates, Oxidising and reducing Agents for functional groups, Mechanisms for substitution in complexes and ways to determine mechanism, Trans effect causes and it's use in synthesis of complexes, Phase transition thermodynamics, Claussius - Clapereyon Equation , Derivation of raults law and elevation in boiling point and depression of freezing point derivation and some other topics.

Last but another interesting aspect of the camp was the practicals. Just wow , the lab was of colledge level with a huge amount of chemicals and various kinds of instruments, there were individual tables for everyone with every thing provided at the table itself with no movement whatsoever. The new instruments we were introduced were :

1) Pipette bulb(No need for mouth pipetting)
2) Hot plate and hot water bath( for heating)
3) Ice bath( for cooling to 0 C)
4) Glass rods(we were rarely given glass rods at school)
5) Droppers.
6) Micro capillary ( for absorbing a very small amount of liquid)
7) Thin Layer Chromatography plate,chamber.

The things we did there includes.

1) Thin Layer Chromatography.
2) Synthesis of compounds like.
• 2-4 DNP Derivative
• Imimes( more specifically condensing 4-ethoxy aniline and 4- nitro Benzaldehyde)
• Copper AcetylAcetonato Chelate complex.
• Acid Orange ( An azo dye, my favourite, azo coupling of B-Napthol and Sulphanillic Acid)
3) Some very typical titrations like :
• Double titration ( Determining the amount of Carbonate and bicarbonate in the sample)
• Iodometric titration( Determining the amount of Ascorbic acid in the sample)
• Complexometric and redox titration ( Toughest, Determining the amount of Calcium and magnesium in the sample, titrating with standard EDTA and KMnO4) in the solution.

With this I finish my note if you have anything to ask feel free to ask it.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

• Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
• Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
• Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.

Kinda late, but Ameet Deshpandey's from my school! Anyways, what are the most important topics for INChO?

- 4 years, 6 months ago

The results of the camp :

1) Piyush Kabra(Jaipur,Yay) 2) Amit Deshpandey(Banglore,My good friend) 3)BVS Nayadu( Hyderabad) 4) Shitiz Garg (Kota)

These four were selected for ICHO.

Piyush - Experimental Topper

I don't remember the theory topper but he didn't got selected. He was from Hyderabad. Practicals took care of him

- 4 years, 10 months ago

"Practicals took care of him" :- ROTFL :D But yeah, its very sad to see that he didnt get selected. And, BVS Nayudu take a bow !!! He's got in to all 3 I guess, PC and Astro!! :o

- 4 years, 9 months ago

BVS Nayadu? Didnt he get silver in IPHO last year.

- 4 years, 9 months ago

What's happened to THE RONAK AGARWAL ? You didn't get selected to represent India :(

- 4 years, 10 months ago

@Ronak Agarwal could you please share the TEST papers?

- 2 years, 10 months ago

They don't give q papers in Ocsc.Like was the case with the ocsc in Ijso which I attended last year.

- 2 years, 10 months ago

They give Question Papers in Astronomy though.

- 2 years, 10 months ago

So rajdeep you got selected??in astro.

- 2 years, 10 months ago

Nah. I didn't make the team. It was tough.

- 2 years, 10 months ago

Who are the ones who made it.?I know navneel has made it....Also do you know the IMOTC results...?

- 2 years, 10 months ago

Wajid , Niel , Saswata , Parth Shastri

- 2 years, 10 months ago

Didn't shauryasikt and yash attend the camp.....??You missed narrowly in inpho this yr...Never mind that was a great attempt and you are gonna be in the team this yr.Best of luck.

- 2 years, 10 months ago

No , they didn't. I think they have JEE in 6 days , that is why. Thanks , I'll try my best. Best of Luck to you too.

- 2 years, 10 months ago

Thanks rajdeep

- 2 years, 10 months ago

Ya I know them tarush, anant, yash, Aditya, subham, sutanay are the members. I met yash last year in the camp... He was attending maths.

- 2 years, 10 months ago

How was the camp? Did you get selected to any this year?

- 2 years, 10 months ago

Na although I appeared in inpho, inao, inmo.o didn't get through in any. Leave maths and astro. I tried hard for incho but didn't fare that well...this yr the paper being easy scores were quite high.... As much as 68/75....was the toppers score.

- 2 years, 10 months ago

I had given INMO,INAO... got too nervous in INAO due to which i made all kinds of silly mistakes :p

- 2 years, 10 months ago

You met Aman agarwal? He's a friend of mine who attended the astro camp

- 2 years, 10 months ago

Yup.

- 2 years, 10 months ago

are u an allen student and in allen champ how the winner is declared

- 2 years, 9 months ago

What bout physics ocsc?

- 2 years, 10 months ago

Not in physics also.

- 2 years, 10 months ago

No I guess..... Are you attending it.....

- 2 years, 10 months ago

nope... missed nsep by a question, so hoping for next year!

- 2 years, 10 months ago

then how is the testing done? Do they take back the papers or something?

- 2 years, 10 months ago

The Blank to fill solutions is in the Question Paper itself.

- 2 years, 10 months ago

Hey rajdeep you applied for Allen champ??

- 2 years, 10 months ago

Yup. Let's see.

- 2 years, 10 months ago

I also want to ask the same ques as Ishan.. How do u get selected for these camps??

- 4 years, 10 months ago

First of all congrats again! I seriously can't understand half of what you've written in the practicals section :P It's really amazing. I guess there's no wi-fi and you gotta depend on data cards right? How does one prepare for practicals? (Is prep required?, How did you do prep?) & like how many of you shared a room? Was there enough space? :P How many out of the 37 attended the camp?

- 4 years, 10 months ago

3 people shared a room. Good lab skills and pressure management is all one needs in a practical exam .

Everyone attended the camp.

I can't manage the pressure, even though one practical was of 5 Hours.

- 4 years, 10 months ago

Thanks! and yeah, congrats once again for your adv. score. Top-50 for sure!!

- 4 years, 10 months ago

I would actually be updating my score since my actual score as of now is 370.

People here at OCSC are getting seriously high scores , one person Janak from indore is getting like 448, there are at least 15 people scoring above me in the camp.

- 4 years, 10 months ago

:< You mean to say 5 hours is less? I guess even the longest theory test in an olympiad is only around 7 hours. 5 hours of standing and messing with equipments calls for a really good stamina ..

What?? Really? 448 ? Who's he (full name)

- 4 years, 10 months ago

Janak agarwal he is expecting AIR -1, there are 2-3 more students from my city who are expecting under AIR-25.

- 4 years, 10 months ago

Oh I see.

- 4 years, 10 months ago

@Krishna Sharma how much did janak get?? There's a guy in barc who's got 481.

- 4 years, 10 months ago

OMG! 481, was the paper leaked ??

- 4 years, 10 months ago

@Krishna Sharma ; how much are you expecting ?

- 4 years, 10 months ago

There was a 3.5 Hour experimemt which had three tasks 1) Synthesising imines ,2) A very tough and long titration 3) Identification of 8 organic compounds among the 8 alternatives, there were a total of 56 reactions.

And I gave up at 3 Hours

- 4 years, 10 months ago

I gave up on a problem in the final test during round -2 TST which cost me the team selection. Happens dude :'(

- 4 years, 10 months ago

Many congratulations for this amazing feat!Btw when is your camp for INPhO?

- 4 years, 10 months ago

I couldn't qualify NSEP shit!!

- 4 years, 10 months ago

Oh, I am really sorry for asking this question! But generally...what is your approach towards Olympiads ? How do you go about preparing for these? Was preparing for the JEE itself sufficient ? Since Olympiads like RMO etc. show a considerable deviation from the JEE syllabus.

- 4 years, 10 months ago

Ronak you are amazing. You are constant source of inspiritation for all of us. By the way I am in Fiitjee vaishali. Most people keep talking about you here. Congratulations bro. One thing more did you meet anyone who was not a class 12 pass.

- 4 years, 10 months ago

Toppers are talked about everywhere :)

- 4 years, 10 months ago

There was only one and that one was Valay Agarwal.( He is from Jaipur also)

- 4 years, 10 months ago

bro, did they give you any books or material to read, or did they only teach in class and start testing?

also, who got selected?

- 4 years, 10 months ago

Doing chemistry practicals in those labs was a dream experience for me, the results are not yet announced, I am still in Mumbai, they did give a book for chemistry but that was not very interesting, firstly they gave lectures and then the tests happened.

- 4 years, 10 months ago

that is great, i cant wait 3 more days after reading this, i am sure the competition will be stiff and fun as anything,

, and finally, was the book to be shared? or individually,

and yeah, best of luck,

- 4 years, 10 months ago

@Ronak Agarwal Is Janak Agrawal (a student of my coaching in Indore) there with you at the camp?? I heard in my coaching that he went for some chemistry camp in Mumbai just after his JEE advanced.

- 4 years, 10 months ago

Yes.

- 4 years, 10 months ago

Great!!

- 4 years, 10 months ago

i suppose the camp is over, can you please tell the results?

- 4 years, 10 months ago

Did you have a Physics camp ?

- 4 years, 10 months ago

yes, it reckons in two days, leaving on 7

- 4 years, 10 months ago

Do meet Sheshansh He is a nice guy, also be involved with group, it's serious fun, don't just simply study there.

Cheers from Ronak

- 4 years, 10 months ago

can you please give some tips for experiment ? (other than calm mind ) (such as does error analsys matter? will they teach you how to calculate significant digits)

- 4 years, 9 months ago

The main mistake I did in practicals is to try to follow the instructions given in the practical sheet, the point is you have to first understand what steps are important how it works, this helps to have a command on it and then perform the practical perfectly.

Also people at the camp clearly said that there are more marks for the reading rather than the calculations, for example if you took correct readings but wrongly calculated it to get the wrong answer than also you will not be great loss. Remember experts perform the same experiment and get a master reading and from there marks are distributed.

Also they know our limited skills in lab and hence they do introduce us to new instruments in some initial sessions.

Error analysis doesn't hold that high a marks, so don't worry about it.

- 4 years, 9 months ago

thanks for the tips, i shall give it everything i got

- 4 years, 9 months ago

sir were you from fiitjee jaipur ..

- 3 years, 9 months ago

Yes.

- 3 years, 9 months ago

sir i want to ask you something . sir i am currently at allen jaipur ... at vaishali centre.. i am presently in class 10 . next year i will opt pcm .sir should i go at main head centre i.e jln marg or contiue at vaishali where i am presently studyig.. is there a difference at head centre or not ..please guide sir...

- 3 years, 9 months ago

All the best for it . :)

- 4 years, 10 months ago

All the best :)

- 4 years, 9 months ago

can we apply for primary exams for inpho after class 12th ! This year i was not able to prepare much for nsep hence i don't expect to be selected for the same.

- 4 years, 9 months ago

No sorry.

- 4 years, 9 months ago

how did you prepare for chemistry olympiads??can you suggest me any good book for the preparation of it?

- 3 years, 10 months ago

@Ronak Agarwal Wow, that sounds amazing! How did you get selected for this camp? Where was it held? Also, have you attended a camp like this for Maths (? Would you mind if I asked you some slightly off-topic questions about preparations? Our Sir at FIITJEE was telling us about you and we could learn a lot from you.

- 4 years, 10 months ago

I firstly qualified NSEC and then INCHO to qualify for this camp. Ishan Das Gupta where you are exactly from.

- 4 years, 10 months ago

BTW, results must be announced by today right? Who are the 4 toppers?

- 4 years, 10 months ago

Well , I had always expected you to be among the top 10 in JEE . So I'm a bit disappointed :(

- 4 years, 10 months ago

I was depressed for about 2 days after my result.

- 4 years, 10 months ago

Btw which IIT do you want to join ? If it's IIT-M , I might have the honor of meeting you :P

- 4 years, 10 months ago

He has a fair chance of getting everything he wants at any of the IIT's , so might be his preference will be IIT-B.

- 4 years, 10 months ago

how much are you getting, Roopesh.

- 4 years, 10 months ago

You will be in the top 50, then

why were you depressed ? why ??

- 4 years, 10 months ago

If we clear NSEC and are not able to clear INCHO same year, do we have to appear for NSEC again next year?

- 4 years, 7 months ago

YES

- 1 year, 6 months ago
