Shenal Kotuwewatta's Messageboard

YaY! Got selected for the IMO 2014!

I am Shenal Kotuwewatta, from Sri Lanka. I am in Grade 10. I like reading comics and novels, and also playing computer games and cricket. I solve a problem on Brilliant daily no matter where am I. I just love those streaks.

If you have heard about IMSO or IMC, I am good at those contests. (was good at IMSO, I am over 13 now)

Anyway, feel free to contact me via this message board!

Meanwhile, check this out!

Why, in most asian countries, rice is the basic thing that creates all the good foods. And there are a lot of good foods in Asia \( \ddot \smile \)

Hi! How are you so good at math? Was it due to exposure to lot of math contests or due to lot of study? And, your name is confusing...so I assume you're a boy. Am I right? And what is the IMSO you r referring to? Link to website please?

Am I so good at math? :) If you think so, problably due to both exposure to lot of math contests or a lot of study.

I am a boy. And the IMSO is this.

@Krishna Ar Wow, so quick! I just got selected yesterday, and you already posted it here. :D Yes, I see you are 14 too. I got selected for the IMO because,

  • I solve a lot of Geometry Problems because I had trouble with Geometry
  • I did past IMO problems
  • I got the maximum possible use of my internet connection to find training material

Of course, you have to train hard to get so far. And being Contestant #2 is pretty awesome too!

@Shenal Kotuwewatta You're the youngest person ever who has made it to the IMO I guess. What resources did you use to build on your geometry? Please share them with me too. I too wanna make it to the IMO, but unfortunately am not as good as you are. What is the procedure to qualify the IMO in SL? Did you get coached...? Please share resources and useful info :)

@Krishna Ar Uh. of course not. There are younger IMO participants.

When it comes to geometry. you should search online for geometry books. Get "Geometry Revisited", learn theorems, solve problems, and improve yourself on trigonometry.

In Sri Lanka, we first face a 30 MCQ paper. The 40 best students then face a 4 1/2 hour paper consisting of 5 problems. The best 12 students are invited to a training one month long. At the end of each week, a 4 1/2 hour TST with 5 problems are given. And the team is selected at the end of the training. :)

@Shenal Kotuwewatta Bah! That's easier that what bullshit happens in India..though its kinda similar to it. All the best! :D And, when I did a random check through IMO participants of 29 countries, this year there was no one younger than 14 -_-

@Shenal Kotuwewatta You know, its such wonderful honour. The Indian selection committee is biased a bit and also is very rigid. Just have 2 more chances. I definitely wanna make it atleast once. No indian<=14 has made it to IMO

@Krishna Ar No. USA is definitely WAY more competitive than India (no offense) and we have a 14 year old IN 10TH GRADE Here usually age 14 means 8th grade

btw that person is Allen Liu

Congrats nonetheless

@David Lee Hey, You mean Daniel Liu? And, you should remember that it's really tough to make it to IMO at less than 15 years of age and even US would have had only handful of children doing so!. You too, I guess are a child prodigy. Right?

@Krishna Ar Hi, if you think that Daniel is that good (which he is), i just proved that USA IMO is very very very very very very very hard (much harder than other countries, even though the IMO teams in other countries could get better than USA). He got a 9 on the USAJMO but Allen gets a 40 or something on the USAMO. And somehow Allen is in 10th grade :o

@David Lee Oh! I didnt know that

Krishna Ar - 3 years, 3 months ago

@Krishna Ar No.

Daniel didn't even take the AMO, he took JMO and got 9. Daniel's in 8th grade. The best people on brilliant (i.e. @Finn Hulse) aren't necessarily the best in real life (i.e. Finn hulse). Not even close.

No offense Finn Hulse

@David Lee I will take that as a mixed compliment. :D

@Krishna Ar Lol, it's not possible for me to get into IMO this year. Although I do really hope that I get to go in future years...
