# Starting to learn Basic Calculus!

Hello Brilliantians! I just got inspired by one of Einstein's article in which it was mentioned that he mastered calculus at the age of 14! Being Inspired, I too wanna do so! So, from where should I start from?

This is the best calculus book I have ever read! Hope it helps you! :)

Thanks!

Calculus the Easy Way (sequel to Algebra and Trigonometry the Easy Way) helped me also master calculus by 14. Also The Calculus Livesaver. And lots of videos. (This includes stuff like DVDs intended as study guides or for homeschooling.)

Having an amazing parent who buys you tons of math books helps. (I love you, dad!)

I don't know why it says I'm 20 over there. I'm 15.

- 2 years, 11 months ago

Keep up bro!

Hey I'm having same case as yours

- 2 years, 8 months ago

Nice to learn that.

- 2 years, 8 months ago

I think you can refer NCERT Class 11 and Class 12 Mathematics Textbooks. You can also refer reference books like the books written by Dr. R D Sharma for Class 11 and 12. Mastering calculus requires a lot of practice. By the way have you mastered trigonometry and did you refer the books that I had suggested for trigonometry ?

Why don't U do mechanics on Brilliant?

I am not strong in mechanics. I do practice the mechanics problems on Brilliant but I think I can solve more problems on Brilliant only after more exposure to mechanics. I do have a brief idea about kinematics, gravitation, vectors , thermodynamics, optics, etc. but I can solve the questions on Brilliant only when I have mastered them through practice.

Manish, do you find the Mechanics practice section useful on Brilliant? Do you have any suggestions for improvement in that area?

Staff - 3 years ago

Yes Sir, I do find mechanics practice section very useful on brilliant. I can give my suggestions only after I have mastered the field.

Practice and come back to solve problems on brillaint!

Ya ! Thank u for your advice. I hope to solve mechanics problems on brilliant very soon.

Ya! Your suggestions were very good! I found NCERT quiet easy ! I reffered to class 9 IIT Foundation, quiet hard! Well, of which class U R ?

I have just passed Class 10 in 2015. My course for JEE 2017 will begin on 22 April.

Best of Luck for Ur Course!

Thank you

What do U wanna become?

I aspire to study Computer Science in a good IIT and if possible become a civil servant after that. As of now I have to prepare for NTSE 2nd stage scheduled on 10th May during my holidays.

Good! Do you know anyone on Brilliant who wants to become a Scientist? ( I too want to!)

I want to become a scientist! I am not surprised to see a companion, who aspires to be a scientist!

BTW, which field do you want to enter in? And are you a 10 grader at present???

What do you mean?

Ur Problems are just great!

Thank you very much!

I am a ninth grader, and field = Theoretical physics

What a surprise, me too involved in theoretical physics! I think you are a great follower of Albert Einstien .

U may know from my prof pic!

Obviously!

What is your age? ( in real)

I am presently 15 years old and a 10 grader.

What are your plans for becoming a theoretical physicist?

My first target is to go into some good IIT, and train myself there, and probably you might have heard of CERN in Switzerland, I would like to be a physicst there, it is a place where they research on the origins of the universe!!!

Our interests are also same wow! I want also to go to IIT first.

Have you heard of CERN?

Sure! It is my dream home since class 5!

What next, I hope we meet together at CERN!

Sure! Do U know quantum mechanics?

Of course! Though I am a beginner I have quite a bit of knowledge in it, I have also studied a lot about the hadron collider at CERN, if you would like to get some entertainment and knowledge read Dan Brown's novels...

Me too! well , ever given rmo?

No, but,I have given NSO and IMO

Did you mean NSO, IMO of SOF ?

Yes

Yes I have been giving them since I was in Class 3.

What happened finally in your stint at the ESPN quiz? @Manish Dash and do you quiz these days too? :)

We missed the semifinals by a whisker of 5 points........... Yes , I had been participating in quizzes till the end of Class 10. I am proud enough to state that I managed to win the last quiz of my school life in style by finishing first in CSI Wizkid quiz which was a city level general quiz in which about 140-150 teams from over 40 schools of Vizag participated.

Quizzing has been one of my greatest hobbies since childhood. I have mentioned about it in my profile. I hope to continue it after intermediate as I wouldn't be able to do so during that time.

How did you know that my team was one among those teams in ESPN quiz ?

IDK, I was watching a few videos of ESPN quiz. (long back, I had seen your team) . Then after seeing you here , was reminisced about it! :D .

I too like quizzing. I mayn't have won too many quizzes like you/ other professionals, but I too have a few victories to my name (Aqua Regia, VodaFone Quiz, Nuclear Quiz-ISRP&DAE etc). On a side note, I like to waste time. :P

Hello Krishna!

hi

Me too...

Yes, he means that only! have U given them?

Imo ranks?

NSO state rank - 8. IMO state rank - 7

Fabulous! R U called Einstein in Your Class?

No, I am called Leonardo Da Vinci

Why so?

'Cause I am the biggest follower of him in our whole school, see my profile picture.

Did you become a fan of him after you read Dan Brown's novel 'the Da Vinci Code'?

Not exactly, but it happened that I read about his history in grade 4 and I am a fan since then..,

oh,ok!it was just a guess.

see Sravanth's comment

It is about a search for the holy Grail, most of it is about code breaking.

is there any connection to it with QM?

No. But the information about quantum mechanics is in his other novel called ANGELS AND DEMONS.

Oh yes! And there is a lot about CERN and it has a lot of information about anti matter and QM.

Oh yes you can read it. There is a lot of GK about theoretical physics, but in some parts it is age restricted but don,'t mind them.

oh! be careful!

As you are interested in theoretical physics you can get a lot of information.

Thank you, I have got to go, nice meeting you, bye!

Bye!

i am also in class 10th.

Bhaiya, have U participated in RMO?

ya!It was obvious!

BTW, have you participated in IMO or NSO, if yes what are your ranks?

No, I just hate 'em because all coaching students win!

But I have had no coaching. . .

Wow! but in our class everybody has except me!

Really, but just mere practice can make you a champion.

Sure!then I would also participate!

Try it this year. I am on full practice, I had got the 9 grade results of 2 level, which I have just told you before, last fortnight.

I am now trying to get state 1 st this year. . .

Also try RMO! I am only gonna give math olympiads this year!

Sure, as I have heard about it this year only I wasn't,t able to participate till now. . .

I don't know anyone on Brilliant who wants to become a scientist but I do know a few persons who want to become scientists and are not on brilliant. One among them is my cousin who is now in IISc, Bangalore. His name is Spandan Dash. He studied in DAV C.S.PUR in Classs 11 and 12.

He is of which branch?

He has now finished his 2nd year there and has taken Physics as his major subject and biology as minor subject

He wants to become a physicist?

I think he wants to explore about space. Yes I do think that he wants to become a physicist. By the way have you started preparing for NTSE exam ?

How did U know that I have qualaified for it! Yes, started!

I just wanted to know whether you had started preparing for it or not .

I was just asking you. Are you in Class 10 that you have qualified in NTSE ?

No! I am a ninth grader( session started now only) . In our school, NTSE qualification test was conducted and the top 50 were taken to a separate section for training for the NTSE! And I was one of them

OK. Thats good to know about. I think it is the right time for you to start preparing for NTSE Stage 1.

Does it Have stages?

Obviously. NTSE has 2 levels or stages. The 1st level is the State level and is conducted by the the state governments and the 2nd level is the national level conducted by NCERT.

Whoo! Have u given rmo? please suggest me as i am gonna give that this year!

I had given pre rmo in class 9 but not in class 10 as it was during my first term examinations. But I do have seen the question paper and I think solving maths problems on Brilliant will help you a lot. Mastering permutations and combinations, algebra, trigonometry may help you succeed

books!

1.The art and craft of problem solving- Paul Zeitz

1. Problem solving strategies- Arthur Engel

2. There is a good book called go figure. It is all about math and has a lot of hard puzzles

Please refer to my note " Request for help" for further details

Some less expensive ones?

I think you can get a good idea by going to Pragyna Bookstore and Sriram Bookstore at Master Canteen

Where do U stay? BBSR? Because thse names we people only know!

I stay in Visakhapatnam but my native place is in BBSR . I have been to those book stores many times when I visit my relatives.

Hope to meet one day!

Ya ! For sure.
