One scoping note before the details: Common Core does not assign its high-school standards to named courses. The Algebra 1 / Geometry / Algebra 2 split used on this page follows the traditional course sequence most schools use, and your district may sequence some of these topics differently.

What does Brilliant cover well?
Linear equations, inequalities, and systems. Brilliant treats the three forms of a line as tools rather than formats to memorize — you write equations from graphs, from costs, and from word constraints in Standard Form of an Equation and Point-Slope Form. Systems are solved both graphically and algebraically, including the scaling step that makes elimination work in Scaling an Equation. Graphing the solution set of a linear inequality or a system of inequalities (A.REI.12) is taught in Representing Solutions.
Quadratics and factoring. This is Brilliant’s single strongest Algebra 1 block. All four solving methods are present: factoring in Solving by Factoring, square roots in Finding Solutions, completing the square in Solving by Completing the Square, and the formula itself in The Quadratic Formula. Rather than handing over the formula, the course derives it by completing the square — exactly what the standard asks for (A.REI.4.a). Using factored form to reveal a parabola’s zeros (A.SSE.3.a) is taught in Factored Form. The Discriminant covers predicting the number and type of solutions.
Functions and function notation. Introduction to Functions builds the definition from the ground up: writing rules, matching inputs to outputs, and finding Domain and Range. Reading a graph for intercepts, extrema, and increasing and decreasing intervals is covered in Increasing and Decreasing. Transformations get the fullest treatment of any topic here — shifts, stretches, and reflections (F.BF.3) are all taught, starting with Vertical Shifting.
Exponential growth and decay. Finding the Base and Coefficient builds exponential functions from graphs and scenarios, Linear Comparisons shows exponential growth overtaking linear growth, and Modeling Compound Interest applies it to money.
Scatter plots and lines of fit. The statistics strand of Algebra 1 is covered by Regression: judging direction and strength in Correlation Extremes, fitting a least-squares line in Calculating Error, predicting from it in Simple Linear Regression, and recognizing when a straight line is the wrong summary in Nonlinear Relationships.
What should an Algebra 1 student supplement?
A few things are worth knowing before you rely on Brilliant for a whole year of Algebra 1.
Brilliant is a reasoning-and-practice layer, not a whole course. It is built to make the idea click and to give you practice reasoning with it, not to reproduce every problem type, notation convention, or fluency drill your teacher will assign. Use it alongside your class materials, not instead of them.
A few routine Algebra 1 topics are best picked up from your class materials. For building a one-variable equation or inequality out of a word problem, rearranging a formula to isolate a variable, average rate of change over an interval, and arithmetic and geometric sequences, use your textbook and your teacher’s assignments — all four show up regularly on tests.
Two topics your class may cover are on Brilliant, but outside its Algebra 1 material. Adding, subtracting, and multiplying polynomials is taught in Polynomials and Quadratics, and rational exponents and radicals in Exponents & Radicals and Equations & Curves. Both are usually sequenced into Algebra 2, so they are covered on the Algebra 2 page — but if your Algebra 1 class reaches them, the lessons exist.
One-variable solving lives in earlier courses. Brilliant’s multi-step equation work sits in Solving Equations and Linear Expressions & Equations rather than in an Algebra 1 course. Where does Brilliant go past Algebra 1?
Several courses that matched Algebra 1 standards are aimed higher, and they are the natural next step rather than a starting point. Equations & Curves has more skills mapped to Algebra 1 standards than any other course — 30 — but it does that work on square root graphs, hyperbolas, and rational expressions at an eleventh- and twelfth-grade level. Polynomials extends factoring and graphing past the quadratic case. Come back to both after Algebra 1, or dip in if you want the harder version of transformations.

Is Brilliant enough to prepare for an Algebra 1 end-of-course exam?
Brilliant builds the underlying skills that end-of-course exams test, especially linear functions, systems, quadratics, and interpreting graphs. It is not an exam-prep course: it does not teach test format, timing, or your state’s specific question types, and it does not include full-length practice tests. Use your state’s released practice materials for those.
My school teaches Integrated Math 1 instead of Algebra 1. Does this page still apply?
Largely, yes. Integrated Math 1 covers most of the same function and equation standards, usually with some geometry and statistics folded in. Check the topics you are assigned against the course table above and pick by topic rather than by course name.
Do I need to complete a whole Brilliant course?
No. Brilliant courses are made of short lessons that stand on their own, so you can open the lesson that matches this week’s topic without working through everything before it. Completing a course in order helps most when the topic is new to you rather than being reviewed.
What if the Algebra 1 material stopped making sense partway through?
That usually means an earlier skill is blocking the current one — commonly solving multi-step equations, working with negative numbers, or reading the coordinate plane. Start at Solving Equations or Coordinate Plane, repair the specific gap, then come back. If the gap is wide or persistent, tell your teacher; that is faster than working backwards alone.
