What to try before paying for a private math tutor

Before hiring a private math tutor, determine whether your child needs occasional concept help, consistent practice, or specialist intervention.

What does private math tutoring cost?

Published rates vary. Wyzant lists an average of $35–$60 per hour for 9th-grade math tutors, while Learner says qualified one-on-one math tutoring generally costs $60–$80 per hour. [1][2]

Research finds the largest gains in structured high-impact tutoring programs that meet three or more times per week. [3] That can be valuable for learners who are substantially behind, but many families need only occasional support.

An annual Brilliant subscription costs $240, or $20 per month in the US, with regional variation. A year of Brilliant costs about the same as 3–4 hours of one-on-one tutoring at $60–$80 per hour.
