You can homeschool algebra, including Algebra I and Algebra II, even if you are not confident teaching math. Choose a program that provides a structured curriculum, direct instruction, responsive help, unassisted assessments, and usable records; your role is to choose the destination, protect the schedule, review progress, and bring in human help when the learner remains stuck. Brilliant’s three algebra paths cover the full Algebra I and Algebra II sequence and can carry much of the day-to-day instruction and feedback, while families remain responsible for their specific credit, grading, and transcript requirements.
You do not need to relearn every algebra procedure before your child begins. You do need to know what course the learner is taking, what independent understanding should look like, and when another kind of support is necessary.

Is the learner ready for Algebra I?
Before beginning, check whether the learner can independently do most of the following:
- calculate with fractions and decimals;
- work with positive and negative numbers;
- apply order of operations;
- reason with ratios, rates, and percentages;
- evaluate an expression after substituting a value;
- solve a one-step or simple two-step equation;
- plot and interpret points on a coordinate plane;
- explain what a variable represents.
Try these representative tasks without hints. This is a readiness screen, not a formal placement test.
- Calculate 3/4 + 2/3.
- Calculate −7 + 12.
- Evaluate 3(4 + 2) − 5.
- A $40 item is discounted by 25%. What is the new price?
- Evaluate 2x + 3 when x = −2.

If one skill is weak, repair it alongside the first algebra lessons. If several prerequisites block the learner from engaging with the main idea, begin with an earlier Brilliant course or use the course placement guide. Brilliant’s signup diagnostic and level checks can recommend work inside Brilliant, but they do not determine school placement or award credit.
Is the learner ready for Algebra II?
Before beginning Algebra II, check whether the learner can independently:
- simplify and evaluate algebraic expressions;
- solve linear equations and inequalities;
- solve a system of two linear equations;
- interpret slope, intercepts, and linear functions in graphs, tables, equations, and words;
- apply exponent rules and simplify radicals;
- factor and solve basic quadratic equations;
- use function notation and identify domain and range;
- explain how an equation and its graph represent the same relationship.
If one topic is weak, review the relevant Algebra Fundamentals or Intermediate Algebra course before advancing. If several of these skills are not yet secure, complete more of the Algebra I sequence first. As with the Algebra I screen, these checks guide course selection inside a homeschool plan; they are not an official school placement test.
Choose the right teaching model
A parent who is not comfortable teaching algebra does not have to become the instructor. Choose the support model that matches the learner.

What Brilliant covers in algebra
Brilliant’s current algebra sequence contains 16 courses across three learning paths:
- Algebra Fundamentals—5 courses: Linear Equations, Coordinate Geometry, Linear Relationships, Exponents and Radicals, and Visual Algebra.

Use the Common Core mappings in both directions
Brilliant publishes two complementary Common Core State Standards for Mathematics resources:
- The standard-first Common Core map begins with a standard and identifies relevant Brilliant courses and lessons. Use it to plan a course and identify gaps.
- The lesson-first standards alignment guide begins with a Brilliant course or lesson and identifies the Common Core standards it supports. Use it to document completed work.

A mapped lesson supports concepts and skills related to the standard. It does not by itself reproduce every required activity, assessment, fluency expectation, proof, or instructional sequence. Check both maps, use their last-verified dates, and supplement any marked gap or local requirement.
What happens when the learner is stuck
Brilliant’s digital tutor Koji works inside of the interactive math lessons. It can see the learner’s step, point to relevant information, change or sketch a visual representation, ask a smaller question, and explain the reasoning without simply revealing the final answer.

Records, grading, accreditation, and credit
Brilliant is fully accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACS WASC). This recognizes the quality of Brilliant’s educational program; Brilliant is not a degree-granting K–12 school and does not issue diplomas, school course credit, grades, or official transcripts.
A family-created Algebra I or Algebra II record can include:
- the course title, description, dates, and instructional resources;
- the Common Core standards addressed, using the two public mappings;
- Brilliant courses and lessons completed;
- progress reports and practice data;
- unassisted topic checks and a cumulative assessment;
- representative written solutions and explanations;
- a grading rubric and final grade, if the family assigns one;
- approximate instructional time where required.
Requirements vary by location. Confirm what a school, umbrella program, state, college, or athletic organization will accept before beginning if external credit or placement matters. See Is Brilliant accredited? for the current accreditation statement.
When Brilliant is a strong fit
Use Brilliant as the main algebra teaching resource when the learner:
- understands visual and interactive explanations;
- can work independently for a focused period;
- needs flexibility to move faster or slower by topic;
- benefits from help at the exact moment of confusion;
- is willing to think through problems rather than copy procedures.
Add another resource or human instructor when an exact local syllabus includes uncovered requirements, formal proofs or extensive written work are required, a learning difference may be affecting progress, or math has become a recurring source of distress or conflict.
The goal is not to remove the parent from the education. It is to let the parent supervise a serious algebra course without being the only person capable of teaching it.
