A seventh grader gets Brilliant lessons for proportional relationships and unit rates, adding and subtracting negative numbers, percent increase and decrease, two-step equations and inequalities, angle and circle geometry, scale drawings and volume, and probability. It is spread across several courses rather than gathered into one “grade 7” course, so the real question is which course to open for which unit.
Brilliant teaches writing equations for proportional relationships (7.RP.2.c), rewriting expressions to reveal what they mean, such as a price plus tax (7.EE.2), and estimating a probability from past results (7.SP.6). The sections below go topic by topic.

Three more courses carry a single grade-7 skill each: Exponents & Radicals handles raising a negative number to a power, Visual Algebra has combining expressions for a growing pattern, and Everyday Statistics has comparing data sets with box plots.
Ignore the grade labels on those courses. Solving Equations is labeled GR 5–6 and Geometry and Measurement GR 4–6, but both carry real seventh-grade content. Start with the topic, not the label.
Proportional relationships and unit rates
Proportional Reasoning is the course for this unit. It covers writing the equation of a proportional relationship in Writing Equations and Equation from a Point, and graphing and the constant of proportionality in Plotting Points and Constant of Proportionality.
Brilliant’s lessons mostly assume the relationship is proportional and ask what follows, so use your class materials for computing a unit rate from a ratio of fractions (half a mile in a quarter hour) and for deciding whether a table or graph is proportional in the first place.
Negative numbers
Negative Numbers covers the addition and subtraction half of the rational number strand thoroughly, using tiles and the number line before symbols. Adding The Opposite builds the idea that subtracting is adding the opposite, and Subtracting to Find Distance connects subtraction and absolute value to distance.
Brilliant also has skills for substituting negative values into expressions and for raising a negative number to a power. For dividing integers, the sign rules for quotients, and converting a fraction to a repeating decimal, use your class materials.
Percent problems
Percent work is split. Percentages handles computation — increase and decrease in Calculating Percent Decrease, and compound changes in Compound Calculations and Splitting Percent Changes, which asks whether two 10% cuts equal one 20% cut.
Linear Expressions & Equations handles the algebra. Adding Percentages and Subtracting Percentages cover writing an expression like 1.07p for a price plus tax — the standard about rewriting an expression to reveal what it means.
Two-step equations and inequalities
Linear Expressions & Equations is the deepest course here for seventh grade, with 17 mapped skills. Equations progress from Solving in Two Steps through parentheses in Dividing First, fractional coefficients in Reciprocals, and negative solutions in Negative Solutions. Inequalities get their own sequence, including the rule seventh graders most often miss, in Dividing by a Negative Value.
Solving Equations approaches the same ideas visually with balance scales — a good entry point for a learner who finds the symbolic version opaque.
Geometry: angles, circles, and volume
Geometry and Measurement covers four seventh-grade geometry standards. Scaling Shapes and Reasoning About Area handle scale factor and how area changes under scaling; Volume and Surface Area cover solids.
For circles and angles, Perimeters covers finding circumference from a radius or diameter, and Angles in Polygons covers a regular polygon’s interior and exterior angles. For multi-step problems built on vertical, adjacent, and supplementary angle pairs, use your class materials.
Probability
Probability and Chance covers probability as successes over outcomes, comparing likelihoods, counting outcomes for compound events, and AND/OR probabilities in AND Probabilities and OR Probabilities. Probability in Data covers estimating a probability from relative frequency in The Past And The Future, and introduces simulation in Simulating Outcomes.
What to supplement
Brilliant is a reasoning-and-practice layer, not a full grade-7 curriculum. For these topics, use your class materials, a textbook, or another resource:
- Multiplying and dividing signed numbers, and converting a fraction to a terminating or repeating decimal
- Statistical sampling and inference — drawing a conclusion about a population from a random sample, and comparing two distributions
- Multi-step problems that mix whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and negatives
- Constructing triangles with a ruler and protractor, and describing the cross-section of a prism or pyramid

Frequently asked questions
My seventh grader is behind. Where should they start?
Start in Negative Numbers or Solving Equations rather than the grade-7 material. Both build the prerequisites — signed arithmetic, distributing, balancing an equation — that seventh-grade work assumes. Repairing the earliest blocking gap usually moves a learner faster than repeating current homework.
Does Brilliant give practice for a state test?
Brilliant builds the underlying skills grade-7 assessments draw on, particularly proportional reasoning, equations and inequalities, and probability. It does not teach test format or item types, and sampling and inference come from your class materials. Use released state practice items alongside it.
Can a seventh grader work through this on their own?
