Sixth grade is spread across more Brilliant courses than a single grade level usually is, because Brilliant organizes by topic rather than by school year. A learner does not need to finish any of these courses to get the sixth-grade material — the table points at the specific lesson where that topic begins.
Ratios, rates, and percents
This is the biggest new idea of sixth grade. Proportional Reasoning teaches finding unit rates — dividing to find how much of one quantity goes with exactly one unit of another — in Computing Unit Rates and Two Unit Rates. Around that, it works through ratio language, equivalent ratios, and scale factors using color mixtures and recipes: Finding Batches, Scaling Up Recipes, and Scaling in One Move, where the multiplier is not a whole number.
Percentages handles the percent work in 6.RP.3.c — taking a percent of a number, figuring out what percent one number is of another in Finding the Percentage, and reversing the calculation in Finding the Original Price.
Expressions, equations, and inequalities
Solving Equations is the course most directly built for a sixth grader — Brilliant labels it for grades 5–6 — and it uses balance scales rather than symbol manipulation to introduce what a variable is. It teaches solving one-step equations by applying a single inverse operation (Finding Solutions) and checking whether specific values satisfy an equation’s constraints (Constraints). Inequalities get real attention: writing them from everyday phrases, distinguishing strict from inclusive boundaries in Including the Boundary, and graphing solutions with open and closed circles.
Visual Algebra teaches using a variable to describe a pattern (6.EE.6) and identifying equivalent expressions (6.EE.4). It is labeled for grades 8–9, but the pattern lessons — Describing Patterns and Building Expressions — are the clearest answer Brilliant has to “why would I write a letter instead of a number?”
For exponents and order of operations, Exponents & Radicals covers evaluating expressions with exponents before multiplication and addition, in Order and Evaluation and Parentheses and Exponents.
Negative numbers and the coordinate plane
Sixth grade is where the number line goes both directions and the grid gets four quadrants. Negative Numbers teaches ordering integers and absolute value as distance from zero, including absolute-value inequalities. Coordinate Plane covers plotting pairs and reasoning about signs across quadrants (Negative Coordinates), then finding horizontal and vertical distance between points in Distance Between Points.
Area, surface area, and first statistics
Coordinate Geometry covers triangle and polygon area by having learners break compound shapes into pieces (Combining Rectangles, Polygon Area). Surface area is a single lesson, Surface Area, which covers 6.G.4.
Statistics is the surprise. Everyday Statistics takes on the sixth-grade measures of center and spread with unusual depth for the grade: mean as a balance point (Balancing), median, quartiles and interquartile range, the 1.5 × IQR rule for outliers in Defining Outliers, and matching a data set to its box plot.
What to supplement
Brilliant is a reasoning-and-practice layer, not an arithmetic-fluency drill. If a sixth grader is using Brilliant as their main math practice, a textbook, a worksheet program, or their teacher should cover:
- Standard-algorithm arithmetic. Long division of multi-digit numbers, multi-digit decimal operations, dividing fractions by fractions, and GCF and LCM.
- Signed numbers in context. The temperature, elevation, and debt readings of a negative number — and why “−30 is less than −5” and “a $30 debt is bigger than a $5 debt” are both true.
- Volume of rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths, and converting measurement units with ratio reasoning.
- The vocabulary of statistics. Recognizing a statistical question, describing the shape of a distribution, and reporting the number of observations and their units.

Yes, for the specific lessons above. Brilliant’s grade labels describe where a whole course sits, not where each lesson does. Exponents & Radicals is labeled GR 8 and Visual Algebra GR 8–9, but the exponent-notation and pattern lessons linked here are sixth-grade content.
