To prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT math section, start early and build understanding before you drill question types. Most students meet the PSAT in tenth or eleventh grade, months before the SAT, which is exactly the window where repairing a shaky foundation still pays off. Work the content in the order the exam weights it — algebra first, then the function work of Advanced Math — and take at least one full-length practice test in Bluebook before test day.
Brilliant teaches the math the PSAT tests; College Board's materials teach the exam — format, timing, adaptive modules, full-length practice. Use both, and start with Brilliant while you have the runway.
That runway is the whole argument. Open Brilliant the spring before a fall PSAT and there is time to repair a shaky foundation and still build up through quadratics and functions. Open it the week before and there is not — go straight to College Board’s practice tests instead.
What does the PSAT test in math?
The digital PSAT/NMSQT and the PSAT 10 share one set of College Board content specifications, so sophomores and juniors are tested on the same math:
- Algebra — roughly 35%, 13–15 questions
- Advanced Math — roughly 32.5%, 12–14 questions
- Problem-Solving and Data Analysis — roughly 20%, 7–9 questions
- Geometry and Trigonometry — roughly 12.5%, 4–6 questions
Nearly two-thirds of the section is algebra and the function work that follows — the deepest part of Brilliant’s math catalog. For juniors, the PSAT/NMSQT is also the National Merit qualifying test, which makes fall of eleventh grade a real deadline.
What does Brilliant teach of it?
Brilliant maps its skills to the PSAT’s testing points against the live course catalog. Brilliant’s curriculum team reviews the mapping, and the data behind this page was pulled on September 15, 2026. The testing-point-by-testing-point version is on the PSAT math coverage page.
Algebra is the strongest block, and every testing point in it has Brilliant lessons behind it. Linear equations with negative and fractional coefficients, grouped terms, and deciding whether an equation has one solution, none, or infinitely many are taught in Linear Equations. Slope, intercepts, point-slope form, and perpendicular lines are in Linear Relationships. Systems — writing them from word constraints, graphing, eliminating by scaling — are in Linear Systems.
Advanced Math is nearly as deep. Expanding and factoring binomials, including the sign work that trips students up, runs through Quadratics. Polynomial arithmetic is in Polynomials, growth and decay and compound interest in Exponential Functions. The graph work — where curves intersect, how many times, what shifting or stretching does — is in Equations and Curves.
Problem-Solving and Data Analysis is spread across several courses. Ratios and unit rates from Proportional Reasoning, percent change and compound percent change from Percents, mean, median, and outliers from Everyday Statistics, chart and scatter-plot reading from Exploring Data Visually, probability from Probability and Chance.
Geometry and Trigonometry is taught, but it is the thinnest block. Area, perimeter, surface area, and volume are in Geometry and Measurement; distance and the equation of a circle in Coordinate Geometry; similarity in Coordinate Transformations; the 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 triangles in Trigonometric Functions. Fewer lessons point here than at algebra, so expect to supplement with practice questions.
What won’t you get from Brilliant?
Statistical inference. The PSAT asks you to estimate a population value from a sample — a survey result with a margin of error, and what conclusion it supports. Brilliant does not teach that. Get it from College Board’s practice questions or the statistics chapter of any PSAT prep book.
Everything about the test as a test. Brilliant has no timed sections, no adaptive second module, no Desmos calculator practice, no reference sheet, and no full-length exams. It teaches you to do the math, not to do it in 70 seconds.
What should you study, and in what order?
Work top to bottom: the order follows the exam’s weighting, not your school’s sequence.

With a school year, do all of it — steps 1–10 before a junior-year PSAT also gets you most of the way to the SAT. With a month, do steps 3, 5, and 8: slope and intercepts, factoring, and percent change move the most PSAT questions per hour spent.
Skip step 1 if you can solve a two-sided equation with fractions without stopping to think, and skip step 12 unless you are aiming at the top of the scale — it is an eleventh-and-twelfth-grade course that goes past what the PSAT asks.
What should you use from College Board?
The PSAT/NMSQT is delivered in Bluebook, the same app as the digital SAT, and College Board publishes official full-length practice tests there. Take at least one under timing before test day — the only way to learn how the adaptive format and the clock feel.
Then read the score report closely. It breaks performance down by skill — for juniors, whose score is what National Merit uses, the most specific study plan available. Bring its weak areas back to the table above.
Is Brilliant a complete PSAT prep course?
No. Brilliant is the understanding layer — the algebra, functions, data, and geometry the questions are built from, taught through problems you solve rather than videos you watch. College Board’s materials are the exam layer: format, timing, adaptive modules, official question types, full-length tests. Brilliant is not affiliated with or endorsed by College Board.
Frequently asked questions
Should a sophomore study differently from a junior?
The math is identical — one content specification covers the PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 — but the runway differs. A sophomore has a year and should work the table in order, foundations included. A junior sitting the National Merit qualifying test should start at step 3 and take an official practice test early, so its score report can redirect the time left.
Does studying for the PSAT prepare you for the SAT?

Do I need to finish a whole Brilliant course?
No. Lessons stand on their own, so you can open the one matching a topic you missed on a practice test. Working a course in order helps most when a topic is new to you rather than rusty.
Where do I start if math has felt shaky for a while?
At step 1. If solving multi-step equations still takes effort, every later topic costs time you will not have on a timed section. Repairing that is slower than drilling PSAT questions, and worth more.
