Koji is Brilliant's personal tutor, available inside courses to help you work through problems when you get stuck. Unlike a typical chatbot, Koji can see exactly what you're working on — including the interactive elements on screen — and guides you through the thinking step by step, without ever just giving you the answer. Think of it as having a patient tutor looking over your shoulder, available any time. What can Koji do? Koji answers whenever you are confused – always helping you walk through the thinking, never just giving you the answer. Koji can see what you've done so far, to help pinpoint where a misunderstanding lies. Koji can draw on and manipulate the learning environment to help things make sense. It's like an infinitely patient tutor, able to see over your shoulder. Is Koji AI? Yes. That said, while Koji is built in part with a third-party model, Koji's core behavior and actions are custom to Brilliant and built by our team, based on the pedagogy of our expert educators. For example, Koji can uniquely 'see' Brilliant's interactive components – and then interact with them to highlight or rearrange components to help explain something to a learner. Is Koji accurate? Because of how Koji is connected to Brilliant's overall learning and interactive infrastructure, Koji is exceedingly unlikely to make a math mistake (unlike other AI tutors) – a similar rate to the human errors we occasionally make in our content. Is Koji safe for kids? Koji was designed with safety in mind. Koji always stays on topic, and will not get into personal or topical conversations outside of the learning material. We have advanced safety filters turned on in the underlying models we use, and live alerts around any problematic conversations. We also are COPPA compliant. Further, all third-party services used for processing chats and audio with Koji have zero-data-retention, and are therefore not used in third-party model training. See our privacy policy for more info. Can I turn off Koji? Yes — though it works a little differently depending on your device: Desktop On Desktop, you can mute Koji by clicking the sound icon in the top left of the learning experience. You can also toggle this in account preferences. Mobile On Mobile, you can mute Koji by tapping on the sound icon in the top right of the screen. Note that this icon isn't always visible — you'll need to have the chat open to be able to see it. You can also toggle this setting via your account settings. In all cases, muting Koji will also disable Koji's speech bubbles from appearing (except for the small feedback messages indicating whether you got a question correct or incorrect). Which courses is Koji available on? Right now, Koji is available on most courses – nearly all of our foundational math and coding courses. Koji will be available on more advanced courses, like Calculus, later in 2026. How much can I use Koji on different plans? Free users get a limited preview of Koji — once that's used up, a Premium subscription is needed for full access. Premium subscribers have full, unlimited access to Koji.

Brilliant learners can ask Koji a math question even when it is not part of their current lesson. Koji interprets the question and routes the learner to relevant instruction or practice. This is available to all web users in the Home tab. What can learners ask? Learners can describe a concept, skill, or type of problem in their own words. For example: “I need help with quadratic equations.” “Why do negative exponents work that way?” “Give me practice with triangle similarity.” “What should I review before starting calculus?” Koji uses the request to find a relevant starting point in Brilliant’s math curriculum. What happens after Koji routes the question? Koji identifies the topic. The learner does not need to know the course or lesson name. Brilliant recommends relevant instruction or practice. The learner can build the underlying skill through interactive problems. Koji stays available during the work. If the learner gets stuck, Koji can respond to what is happening in the lesson, highlight relevant information, and ask guiding questions. This approach is designed to help learners practice and understand the concept rather than merely copy an answer. When is a human still useful? Koji can help learners find and practice a broad range of math topics. A teacher, school counselor, or qualified specialist remains the better resource for formal assessment, graded-assignment requirements, accommodations, or questions about a school’s exact method. Most problems on Brilliant are interactive — instead of just picking a multiple-choice answer, you’ll type expressions, drag pieces around, and manipulate things directly on screen. Learning by doing is core to how Brilliant works, but a few of these interactive elements can be confusing the first time you meet them. This article walks through the two we get asked about most. If you ever want to start a problem again from a blank slate, look for the Start over button beneath the problem. How do I use the math keyboard? The math keyboard shows up in problems across many courses whenever you need to enter a number or an expression as your answer — it isn’t tied to any one topic. It appears below the question and lets you type things a regular keyboard can’t easily produce, like fractions and square roots. !The Brilliant math keyboard being used to enter the answer negative square root of 3 over 2 Here’s what the keys do: Numbers and operators — the digits 0–9 and the +, −, and × keys work just like you’d expect. Fraction (□/□) — creates a fraction. If you’ve already typed something, it becomes the numerator; if not, you start in the top box and type the numerator first. Square root (√) — adds a square root symbol with an empty box inside for whatever goes under the root. Arrow keys (◄ and ►) — move your cursor through the expression. ► moves forward — into a denominator, or back out of a fraction or square root — and ◄ moves back. Delete (the ⌫ key in the top corner) — removes the last thing you entered. Many answers are simple enough that you just tap the keys from left to right, and everything lands in order without moving the cursor at all: A whole number like 42 — tap 4, then 2. An expression like 2 × 3 — tap 2, then ×, then 3. A sum like 15 + 8 — tap the keys in order: 1, 5, +, 8. Getting into and out of denominators and roots Fractions and square roots are where the cursor matters, because whatever you type stays inside them until you press ► to step back out. This is the part people miss most. A few concrete examples: A fraction like 3/4 — tap □/□, type 3 in the top box, press ► to move into the bottom box, type 4, then press ► once more to step out of the fraction. A square root like √5 — tap √, type 5, then press ► to come out of the root before typing anything that follows it. Both together, −√3⁄2 (the answer in the example above) — tap −, then √, then 3; press ► to come out of the root; tap □/□, which turns the √3 into the numerator and drops your cursor into the denominator; type 2. The box outlined in blue is the field you’re currently editing. If a problem has more than one answer box, tap a box to select it before you start typing. When your answer is correct, the box turns green with a checkmark. 🎯 Tip: If you get stuck on a math problem, Koji, Brilliant’s tutor, can see exactly what you’ve entered and walk you through the next step. How do I add negative number tiles? To add negative tiles, drag the handle — the small pill-shaped grip at the bottom of the tile stack — downward. You don’t tap the tiles to add them, which is the step most people miss. In the Negative Numbers course, some problems use number tiles to show how positive and negative amounts cancel each other out. A positive tile (+) and a negative tile (−) form a pair that adds up to zero, so a common goal is to add enough negative tiles to cancel every positive one. !Dragging the handle downward to add negative tiles until they cancel the positive tiles Select the handle at the bottom of the tile stack. Drag downward to add negative tiles. Each bit further you drag reveals another − tile. Drag back upward to remove tiles if you add too many. Keep dragging until the number of negative tiles matches what the problem asks for — for example, enough − tiles to cancel all of the + tiles on screen. 🎯 Tip: Made a mess? The parent progress dashboard on Brilliant helps families understand how often a learner is practicing, what they are studying, and how their work is progressing. Parents with a linked learner account can use it to follow up on goals and provide relationship-based accountability without monitoring every problem or teaching the material themselves. As of August 2026, the feature is in limited beta and is scheduled to roll out to all parent accounts later that month. Who can use the parent progress dashboard? A parent can use the dashboard after linking a learner account to their parent account. The dashboard summarizes activity from that linked learner; it is separate from the classroom dashboard available through Brilliant for Educators. What does the parent progress dashboard include? What are they working on? How is the practice going? How can parents use the information? Set a realistic routine. Agree on a weekly goal for practice or active days. Follow up on progress. Review whether the learner is maintaining the routine and moving through relevant material. Start a useful conversation. Ask what felt difficult, what finally clicked, or where more help is needed. Recognize persistence. Celebrate consistent practice and productive help-seeking, not only correct answers. The progress dashboard gives parents visibility without requiring them to teach every concept themselves. It can also create accountability between tutoring appointments or support a family using Brilliant several times per week. How should parents interpret the metrics? Use the dashboard to notice patterns, not to judge a learner from one number or one session. Activity shows consistency, not mastery. Time spent and days active reveal whether practice is happening, but not whether every idea is secure. Accuracy needs context. Lower accuracy can appear when a learner begins appropriately challenging material. Look at the topic, persistence, and later progress as well as the percentage. Course progress shows movement through a path. Pair it with the learner’s ability to explain an idea, solve a new variation, and remember it later. Koji use can reflect productive help-seeking. A tutoring conversation identifies where guidance was requested; it should not automatically be treated as a sign that the learner is failing. Trends matter more than isolated days. Review several weeks when deciding whether a routine or course placement is working. What does the dashboard not replace? Brilliant’s dashboard is a learning-support tool, not a formal grade, standardized assessment, diagnosis, or evaluation of a learning difference. Families should use school records and qualified professionals when those forms of assessment are needed. If an explanation doesn't click, you can ask Koji to try a different approach or break it down further. For dyscalculic learners in particular, the combination of audio narration, on-screen visual overlays, and conversational guidance means you can engage with the material through multiple channels at once.
